POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Part 2 - Beckys Why

The story continues… but first, a little backstory.

Growing up first gen Latina , as the youngest of four with a single mom, I learned to swim at the High Schools pool through Parks & Rec and made friends at school who exposed me to the junior lifeguard program. When mom said it was too expensive, I decided I wanted to express my opinion ( shout out to Mrs. Robles, my 2nd grade teacher, for encouraging this). I decided on writing a letter to the state parks and rec, sharing how unfair it was that the ocean’s free but access to programs wasn’t. To my surprise, they responded with a free spot until I aged out.

That opportunity led me to water polo and swimming at Watsonville High ( photos from my scrap book above) all thanks to community support, dedicated teachers, and programs that believed in me. I never expected that speaking up would open these doors, but it did.

From water polo fights to a dare that pushed me into wrestling ;my journey into sports was born from community, courage, and trusting in my own potential.

Now, as an adult and coach, I reflect on those early experiences. I see how those stepping stones helped shape my resilience and confidence. I understand more than ever the profound impact of a supportive community, mentorship, and belief in someone’s potential. Because I’ve learned that sometimes, all it takes is one person, one opportunity, to change everything.

Part 1 - Beckys Why

Feeling a bit nostalgic tonight ...As we approach a year without Oakie (tomorrow), I’ve been sitting with everything that’s transpired personally, professionally, and emotionally.

Some of these photos are from my old high school wrestling journals, circa 2000–2001. I used to draw and write after every practice, and these particular entries marked a change. This was when i made a mental shift, I decided I was done caring what people thought about girls wrestling. I committed to mastering the craft regardless of any obstacles, id wrestle until i could wrestle no more.

Oakie told me ( around this time) " Going forward, I want you to journal this: Becky does hard things. And anything worth having is worth working for.”
I didn’t write it down that night,I had a system, it was mid-season,but I started saying it. In the shower, on the way to school, before practice. By the next season, I had it in writing.

That room ( field house) this city, this sport, it all changed me. And now, as I close out this school year as the AD at Watsonville High, I can’t help but reflect on how much of my life was built there.

This post is the beginning of a story I’ve been holding close. A story about purpose, identity, and the long, winding road that brought me to where I stand today.

It’s for the girls who’ve ever been told they can’t. It’s for the ones who worked twice as hard just to belong.

And it’s for little Becky, the girl who fell in love with wrestling and was never the same, in the best way possible.

If you’re interested in the story behind the story, follow along. More to come.

Perhaps it goes without saying ….Some of the things I still teach today, I learned from a coach who took the time to show me.

Now our girls get to learn from the coaches who show up for them, and someday they’ll have something to pass on, too.

Continuing with our gratitude this month, thank you to Hollister.

They partnered with GNG last year during freestyle season, and we’ve continued to build that relationship through practices like this one.

Thank you, Coach Roberto and Coach Z, for sharing your knowledge and giving our girls your time.

And to the families who keep getting them here; thank you.

This is how we grow wrestling.

We keep showing up, keep learning, and keep sharing what we know 💜💜💜 taken in Watsonville, California by @dinabeck84

Grit N Grace began with a vision and a belief in what was possible for the young ladies in our area.

Every practice, every lesson, every girl who walks through the door helps bring that vision to life.

To those who have shown up, believed in the mission, and supported the work: thank you.

GNG is still growing, and every bit of encouragement matters.

As GNG looks toward a new year, new goals, and new possibilities, there is so much joy in knowing who is walking alongside us.

Welcome to our house.

There’s room to grow here.

Little ladies. BIG HEART.

So much spunk, so much courage, and already someone to put an arm around when the day is done.

Watching these girls grow into themselves and cheer each other on is something special.

I’m so proud of them 💜

Special shout out to Keke:

FIRST tournament. FIRST time on the competition mat. FIRST PLACE.

Way to show up !!!!!

Way to be brave. Way to go get ’em. Way to take that first step into LEARNING what you’re capable of.

Keep that spunk, ladies.

Keep that heart.
