Upcycling discarded t-shirts into stylish accessories to promote circular fashion
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
⭐️ Meet Najiha Yahaya, founder of fashion brand @dinnanioff

Dinnani means “it is possible” in Dagbani AND Najiha’s ability to transform discarded single-use T-shirts (like that conference, reunion or marathon t-shirt you have stuffed somewhere in the bottom of your drawer) into high quality FINE yarns certainly lives up to the name.

Najiha worked as a kayayo (head porter) in Kantamanto before joining The Or Foundation’s Mabilgu training program in 2023 where she developed a passion for combining environmental sustainability and crochet, leading her to launch a brand dedicated to both people and planet.

With training support from @urbanfibers_ , Najiha has honed the craft of creating t-shirt yarn that she skillfully knits, weaves or crochets into delicate fashion accessories and wearable garments. Each piece is crafted with care, blending sustainability with style.

> Follow @dinnanioff where you can place custom orders over DM and stay tuned for more ways to patronize Najiha’s products 😉

It’s no secret that clothes are washing up on our beaches, the fashion industry is producing far more than the world can handle.
Every single week, about 15 million garments come into Kantamanto.

I spent time with Latifa (@kuoroearth ) and Najiha (@dinnanioff ) and their teams, watching some of those discarded clothes be transformed into bags, mats, bottle holders and more with so much skill, care, and intention. This is sustainability in real life. Human. Local. Powerful.

As you’re shopping this Christmas, I hope you’ll consider buying from the people doing the work right here.
Support upcyclers. Support Kantamanto.

Thank you @theorispresent for creating space for these stories to be seen

We’ve recently welcomed sustainable fashion brands @theorispresent and @dinnanioff to @mcrmuseumshop ✨. Based in Ghana 🇬🇭, they champion the circular fashion model, and create upcycled clothing and accessories, made from the estimated 15 million secondhand garments that arrive in Kantamanto Market in Ghana every week from the global north 😮.

Here is Najiha, founder of Dinnani, talking about how she creates her products and showcasing her crocheted water bottle holders that you can now buy in our Museum shop 🛍️.

It’s Friday. Let’s put our hat on. Re-made in Ghana to encourage African wear Friday initiative by government.
Custom woven TARN beanie. Made to measure by @kuoroearth and
@dinnanioff as a collaborative piece.
These beanies are sculptural in the way they hold their form on one’s head. A balancing art that is credited to the weight.
Love love.

Here’s to celebrating conscious brands that reimagine what clothing waste could be. I enjoyed spending time with @kuoroearth and @dinnanioff, experiencing their practice through which they lovingly pour their heart and creativity into these upcycled products using the excess clothing from global fashion brands that ends up in Kantamanto Market.

My TARN comes from secondhand tshirts from @nike @loft @hm and A New Day by @target. Global fashion brands like these produce massive amounts of clothes that end up as secondhand in countries like Ghana, but they’re not willing to disclose how many units of clothing they produce each year and that’s why we ask them to #SpeakVolumes!

Show your support by following @kuoroearth and @dinnanioff and pass by @othershowroom if you’re in Accra Ghana, to access their products.

What would you use TARN for?

At Dinnani we source secondhand t-shirts from Kantamanto Market in Accra, and create TARN which is t-shirt yarn to make our crochet bags!

Which one is your favorite?
