Heinz Breloh
Circumspectio

03.–08.11.2026

@dipshooop designed the identity for @phototriennale, drawing on photography’s overlooked phenomena.

Depth of field, lens flares and burned film usually pass unnoticed in an image. dipshop made them the subject, reducing them to two shapes: a circle from the lens’ optics and a rounded rectangle from analogue film’s perforations. Depth of field gets no shape and is represented by a blur.

@dipshooop has given @phototriennale an identity without a single photograph.

For the festival’s 9th edition, the Cologne-based studio turned to the things that usually pass unnoticed inside a photograph: depth of field, lens flares and burned film. It made them the subject. Two shapes are used in the system: a circle drawn from the way light behaves as it passes through a lens, and a rounded rectangle taken from the perforations that pull analogue film through a camera. Depth of field gets no shape of its own and is represented by a blur, softening the geometry.

Colour works in RGB at full and half strength and blends six values into 12, so the overlaps echo the positive/negative inversion of photographic image-making.

For the visual identity of the 9th Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2026, Cologne-based design studio @dipshooop challenged one of the festival’s most obvious visual conventions by creating a system that deliberately avoids using photographs. Instead, the studio built the identity around the invisible mechanics of photography itself, transforming technical artifacts into a distinctive graphic language.
Rather than relying on photographic imagery, the identity draws from three familiar but often overlooked phenomena: depth of field, lens flares, and burned film. These visual characteristics are usually considered byproducts of the photographic process rather than subjects of attention. dipshop repositioned them as the central elements of the festival’s communication, allowing the identity to reflect photography through its material qualities instead of its final images. Excited to share the identity for the 9th Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2026. 📸

Every three years, the Triennial brings together international artists, institutions and audiences through a city-wide program of exhibitions, commissions and events, making Hamburg a focal point for contemporary photography.

Developed around the theme Alliance Infinity Love, the identity is conceived as an open system that expands across formats, scales and contexts. A bold visual language creates a shared framework while allowing the festival’s many voices, venues and perspectives to coexist.

With the festival now open, the visual system extends across every facet of the Triennial — spanning exhibition architecture, digital platforms, merchandise and satellites throughout the city.

Thank you to the team @phototriennale
