🇷🇺 The BMPT Fire Control System and Sights: An Analysis

I have come across some interesting diagrams of the sights and systems of the BMPT (Object 199 variant) and decided to post an analysis on this particular area of the vehicle. The FCS on the vehicle is definitely a departure from standard Russian MBT optics, necessitated by its five-man crew and multiple weapon systems. At the commander’s station, situational awareness through the Izdeliye 7119 panoramic sight provides 360° horizontal coverage and an elevation range from -5° to +45°. A distinction in the BMPT’s workflow is that the Izdeliye 7119 lacks a native thermal channel, relying instead on high-resolution optical and low-level television channels paired with an integrated laser rangefinder. To achieve thermal viewing, the commander utilises a digital display connected to the gunner’s primary suite, allowing for a shared imaging where the commander can designate targets identified via the gunner's sights. This suite is complemented by four TNPO-260 periscopes, ensuring the commander maintains a redundant, high-visibility ability to assess combat conditions.

Primary target engagement is facilitated by the gunner’s Izdeliye 7121 "Sosna" multichannel sight. Not to confuse this with the Sosna-U found in the T-72B3/T-80BVM series, the BMPT’s iteration is tailored for its unmanned combat module. The Sosna integrates thermal, optical, and laser-guidance channels with independent two-plane stabilisation, enabling the gunner to identify and track targets at ranges reaching 7,000 meters, even through smoke, dust, or heavy rain (reportedly). This sight controls everything from the twin 30mm 2A42 cannons to the laser-guided Ataka-T missiles. Auxiliary observation for the gunner is provided by three TNP-165A periscopes, maintaining a fallback visual capability if the primary digital optronics are unavailable.

2️⃣5️⃣🎊🎉 Directed Conflict’s 2025 Rewind

This year has been, well, interesting to say the least. Trump once again entering the White House, and US defence policy is being turned on its head, leaving Europe out to decide its own fate. Conflicts in Thailand, Cambodia, India, Pakistan, obviously the war in Ukraine and Russia, which is still raging and the one in Israel/Palestine that has mostly stopped. Coups in Nepal, Madagascar and the fighting raging on in Myanmar and Russian/Chinese/Western-backed African nations, either dealing with their own coup attempts or a constant threat from terror organisations. As we go into the new year, there will be more war, more conflict and more death. All I can hope for is that all my followers and anyone else out there stay safe, look after their loved ones and live their lives to the fullest extent.

Events below are in order of photos, I believe you guys are smart enough to recognise what is what without me explicitly labelling them. Happy New Year!

1) US Defence Realignment: The Trump administration’s "Transactional Defence" doctrine combined a "pure lethality" Pentagon overhaul with a strategic pivot toward a "grand bargain" with Putin in Alaska, while simultaneously freezing ties with Kyiv following the disastrous Suit Incident with Zelensky in the Oval Office.

2) Assassination of Charlie Kirk: The September 10 sniper attack on the TPUSA leader signalled a violent escalation in America's internal political conflict.

3) Operation Midnight Hammer: The US Air Force utilised B-2 Spirit bombers and GBU-57 penetrators to strike Iran’s hardened nuclear infrastructure at Fordow, (theoretically) resetting the country’s deterrence.

4) Operation Spiderweb: Ukraine’s June 1 drone offensive deployed 117 AI-integrated drones to strike Russian strategic bombers up to 5,000 km from the border, proving that onboard terminal guidance has rendered traditional electronic warfare (EW) blankets obsolete.

🇻🇦 Pope Leo XIV has reportedly been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, according to the Vatican.

The 71 year old pope spent approximately three hours in surgery, where doctors confirmed the diagnosis. The possibility of lung cancer had been suspected before the operation.

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

F-117 Night Hawk in Death Valley 🇺🇸🔥
🔻The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is the world's first operational stealth aircraft, designed by Lockheed Skunk Works to evade enemy radar.
🔹 Angular Shape: Features flat, faceted panels that reflect radar waves away from the receiver instead of back to the source.
🔹 Radar-Absorbent Material (RAM): Coated in specialized paint containing iron microparticles to absorb electromagnetic radiation.
🔹 No Afterburners & Slit Exhausts: Designed without afterburners and with modified exhaust slots to minimize the thermal and infrared signature.
🔹 Internal Weapons Bay: Carries up to 5,000 lbs of ordnance—such as laser-guided bombs and nuclear payloads—internally to prevent radar detection.
🔹 No Onboard Radar: Relies instead on forward-looking infrared (FLIR) systems and a laser designator to find and strike targets silently.

🇷🇺The upgraded T-80BVM during live-fire exercises

Footage from inside the tank offers a clear view of the autoloader mechanism in action. It highlights the system's advantage in terms of rate of fire: the tray aligns with the gun, allowing the projectile and propellant charge to be loaded immediately. However, a drawback is also visible: the spent casing is returned to the mechanism—unlike in the T-72 or T-90, where it is ejected from the tank, thereby reducing the buildup of fumes in the crew compartment.

The largely forgotten German MG-13 and MG-15
_
Pictured here are various photos of the MG-13, the predecessor of the more iconic MG-34 and MG-42, as well as the MG-15 in use with the German army. Many of these photos were taken in the mid-late 1930s during training. Some guns here use the 25 round side box magazine while others sport the 75-round asymmetric double-drum magazine (Doppeltrommel)

🇩🇿Algeria's T-72M1M

This is a fairly straightforward way to upgrade old tanks: take a T-72M1 (the export version of the T-72A), install updated sights—specifically the "ESSA" thermal imager and the "Irtysh" (1G46) day sight—and add the "Shtora" opto-electronic countermeasures system (while the familiar "eyes" are missing here, the system can be identified by the distinctive "horns" above the gun).

One could say the upgrade was carried out in a "cheap but effective" spirit.
