๐Ÿฆ‹Pushing the boundaries of traditional exhibition reviews, Sarah Yanni @sssaritahh fearlessly shares her intimate and thought-provoking vignettes.
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Yanni's unique lens and her captivating words invite us to explore the intertwining threads of movement, joy, resistance, and the complexities of the human body.
โœจIt's a journey that starts from our very own bedrooms and spills over to the streets, spaces where we seek understanding and liberation, not just as women but as various genders navigating a world shaped by patriarchal norms.

hi โค๏ธ reminder dykes day is on tour ๐Ÿ’— please join us for this gathering on Friday June 23 from 6-8p ET in person with several collaborators including @dirt.dmv, @museofire @ciearaadams at New Eagle Creek Saloon by @sadiebarnette at @stablearts !!! learn about the creation and legacy of this bar, the first black gay bar in San Fran. food by @ciearaadams curated by inspiration from dykes day, a holigay! zine making by our @hermetic_state โœจ and @dirt.dmv ! come for the art and drinks stay for the music, food, and celebration ๐ŸŽ‰

Inspired by the New Eagle Creek Saloonโ€™s call to gather, Dirt, in collaboration with STABLE and artist Sadie Barnette, hosts a multi-sensory evening dedicated to Black queer worldbuilding. Including a DMV-inspired set from artist and DJ MUSE(O)FIRE, comestibles from food futurist and designer Cieara Adams, and a feature of Hermetic Stateโ€™s recently published anthology "dykes day, a holigay," the evening underscores the need and importance for spaces to connect. The event both celebrates the long and sustained history of Black queer communities, and imagines new forms of worldbuilding, such as what a holiday for lesbians can look, sound, feel, taste, and smell like.

Happy May Day! Today, we stand in solidarity with workers and the labor movement, as we celebrate the struggles and gains made by workers who have fought tirelessly to improve their working conditions, rights, and dignity. As we remember the sacrifices made by those who came before us, we are reinvigorated to continue the fight.

Early last year, we received funding from @wherewithalgrants to explore and expand topics related to labor, equity, and socio-political justice within the arts. Our intention was to delve into the concept of "labor of love" and its inherent flaws, as well as to critique prevailing labor practices in the arts. However, we must admit that despite the funding, we were unable to advance the work we had hoped to do. Ironically, we found ourselves too overwhelmed with our day jobs in the arts to dedicate the required amount of time and energy to research these important topics. As a result, we had to put the project on hold until now.

We are working towards finding sustainable balance in our workloads, so we can make space for new growth. We will be up and running with new content and updates soon.

Huge thanks to @wpadc for the support on this initiative and to everyone who has continued to pitch, read, and share despite our hiatus! As we relaunch the site, please continue to do so or feel free to message us directly on dm here if you have any questions!

โ€œLABOR OF LOVEโ€: AND OTHER LIES WE'RE SOLD

Thrilled to announce that we have received funding from @wherewithalgrants to support this new initiative for 2022! Want to contribute? Send us an email at youvegotdirt@gmail.com!

Over the course of 2022, Dirt will commission original research and content from established writers and organizers who are working to explore, expand, and expose topics of labor, equity, and socio-political justice within the arts. Seeking to present a broad range of perspectives, the content and collaborations will not be limited by geography, but will rather embrace the overlaps, exchanges, and edges of like-minded thinkers that align with our core belief โ€” that arts writing should be easily accessible; and that artists and arts workers are integral to the evolution of culture and society.

Huge thank you to @wherewithalgrants @wpadc @warholfoundation and to this years panelists Monica Penฬƒa, Programs Manager, @locustprojects Locust Projects (Miami); Eriola Pira, @eriolasgram, Curator, The Vera List Center @veralistcenter (New York); Victoria Reis @victorialynnreis , Executive & Artistic Director, Transformer @transformerdc (DC); and Tiffany Ward @auttrianna , Curator and Founder, Mare Residency @mareresidency (Baltimore/London) for your support!! by @dirt.dmv

*Fresh Dirt* ~ We are deeply honored to present Entanglement 009: Mojdeh Rezaeipour, Natalie Amini, Kamyar Arsani, Rex Delafkaran, Bita Ghavami, Nasrin Navab, Anita Poushan, and Anahita Bradberryโ€จ
Read it now, ๐Ÿ”— in our bio. ๐Ÿ’š

In early 2020, a director of a local institution in DC approached Mojdeh Rezaeipour with a collection of ancient pottery fragments originating in over thirty different sites across the Middle East. โšฑ๏ธ๐Ÿบ Bit by bit this past year, Mojdeh started researching these fragments: learning about the layered histories of the places they come from, looking through similar pieces inside other institutional collections, and having conversations with diasporic artists with lineages across these sites toward a collectively imagined work.ย

The research is ongoing and has since taken on a life of its own, leading her to a collaborative experiment, ยซย Formations of a Diasporic Body,ยย ยป alongside Natalie Amini, Kamyar Arsani, Rex Delafkaran, Bita Ghavami, Nasrin Navab, and Anita Poushan.โ€จ
The show culminated in a live performance in the space featuring Nasrin, Kamyar, and Rex and a screening of a 40-minute film, where Mojdeh pieced together all of their many fragments of memory, movement, poetry, and song through stop motion and projection play. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅโ€จ
On Friday, September 17th, 2021, Dirtโ€™s Editor, Ani Bradberry, brought everyone together to process this work and revisit the project and its potential. The following conversation was not unlike countless other discussions between all artists and lives at the heart of this work.

*Now Live!* โ€˜Hyperlink Blues: Experiments in VR Psychotherapy' โ€” Mark Anthony Hernandez Motaghy grants us an intimate reading of their experience of psychotherapy within a VR space. The sessions began IRL before COVID-19 necessitated the transition to VR, prompting a shift to malleable digital bodies and environments. While an avatar might offer some sort of safety and flexibility with a multitude of selves, digital intimacy is contradicted with the lack of privacy as our data is consistently mined and sold.

Trained in Architecture and currently researching resistance in an age of surveillance capitalism at MIT, Mark offers a unique perspective on the platforms, methods, and emotional consequences of digitized psychotherapy. by @dirt.dmv

*OUR FIRST PUBLISHED PIECE OF 2021 IS NOW LIVE!* โ€˜King of the Roadโ€™ by Muheb Esmat (@muhebistan) takes a closer look into contemporary visual and cultural production in Kabul, Afghanistan through the cityโ€™s vinyl car decals.

Contextualized with a history of Afghan poetry and culture, Esmat writes of the cars windshields as odes to a broken society in uncertain times โ€” passing screens of wisdom soaked with truths about Kabulโ€™s realities and anxieties.ย

Everyoneโ€™s a critic, as a concept, arrived at a time when we, as a collective, felt that the role of criticism and critique became ever more present in our daily lexicon, while also understanding that as terms and phrases become more frequently used, their context and usage is often taken to extremes or out of context.โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ
โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ
The phrase has multiple, endless, and personal meanings, which is why we gravitated towards it. At once it challenges the traditional idea of who is deemed a critic, while also paying tribute to the naysayers and doubters in our lives.โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ

๐Ÿ‘‹ Join us on IG at @dirt.dmv for this week's *LIVE* Shakshouka Sunday on
Nov 1st at 6 pm Tunis (GMT+1) / 9 am PST / 12 EST
~
Our co-founding editor Ikram Lakhdhar (@lalaik) and Tunis-based artist and food researcher Rafram Chaddad (@Rafram_x) will prepare a special Banataj dish (Ingredients: Potatoes, dill, coriander, frying oil, eggs, fish or chicken), and discuss how Rafram deconstructs food to reconstruct cultural and personal narratives.

~

The word shakshouka in Amazigh/Tunisian dialect translates to a โ€˜chaotic mixtureโ€™ and to cook it, you can utilize any leftovers of vegetables & spices you have in your fridge to cook a family ragout. Similarly, Shakshouka Sunday IG live series applies the ยดshakshoukaโ€™ concept as a framework inviting an artist to re-hash the leftover ideas from their week/month to create a juicy conversation.

 ~
Rafram Chaddad is a multidisciplinary artist and a food researcher, based in Tunis. As a storyteller, Chaddad draws from stories that are biographical in nature, often from his own family history. Food and traditional craftsmanship are tools at his disposal to tell a tangible truth that can never be too far removed from the viewer.
~
Ikram Lakhdhar (She/Her) is a Tunisian, LA based writer, curator, and cultural entrepreneur. She is interested in pushing the boundaries of cultural production & consumption, art education & criticism, arts & politics, and poetry translation. She is a recent graduate from NYU Tisch. #dirtdmv #shakshouka #sunday #IGlive by @dirt.dmv
