This past weekend we said goodbye to Monaco in The Luminary’s corner storefront gallery.

Operating on principles of an imagined “sovereign-state”, @monaco_usa exemplified practices that enabled artists to define their own market on their own terms; exhibiting artists took home larger portions of sales proceeds, expenses were spread out evenly across the collective, and several shows were exchanged between other small commercial galleries from around the country. Over the years, it has played a vital role in elevating emerging artists inside and outside of St. Louis, providing a platform for contemporary art the intersection of cultural exploration and market engagement.

We want to take a moment to acknowledge the contributions of members across the years who made Monaco: Amanda Bowles, Bruce Burton, Sage Dawson, Kristin Fleischmann Brewer, José Garza, Meghan Grubb, Lyndon Barrois Jr., Addoley Dzegede, Allison Lacher, Jeff Robinson, Gregg Louis, Cole Lu, Tim Portlock, Brea Youngblood, James McAnally, Heather Bennett, Jen Colton, Vaughn Davis Jr., Janie Stamm, Howard Krohn, Flood Plain, Visitor Assembly, Yowshien Kuo, Edo Rosenblith, Kalaija Mallery, Nick Schleicher, Marina May, and Emily Mueller.

We encourage our community to continue creating critical, contemporary spaces that break convention and support praxis. Artist-led spaces are so special and important in a larger arts ecosystem. Thank you for the last seven years, Monaco. We will miss you 🤍🤍

January 25th! I’m giving a talk (of sorts) at @philosophical_research_society Link in bio. Fuck!

“MODERN TIMES is a stand up comedy performance lecture about the decline of the democratic experiment, as told through pictures of underwear taken at Ross Dress For Less. Criticism in the streets, a discount in the sheets. A bitingly surreal and savagely funny portrait of consumerism, feminism and democracy, from the brilliant comedic and creative mind of Christina Catherine Martinez (who recently appeared at PRS as part of “Another Night In Hell With Martin Olson” this past October.”

Special guests to be announced!

Christina Catherine Martinez is a writer, actress, art critic, and comedian in Los Angeles. Her live act has been described as "conceptually highbrow and physically slapstick" and "a great bridge between many different disciplines, including performance art, stand up, and clowning." She’s been named a Comedian You Should Know by Vulture/New York Magazine and a comic to watch by TimeOutLA. She has performed commissions for The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Art Toronto, REDCAT Center for the Performing Arts, The Geffen Contemporary, the Spit Take Comedy Series in Minneapolis, and at the SXSW Comedy Festival in Austin, Texas. Her book of essays Aesthetical Relations, is available from Hesse Press.”

For the latest issue of @textezurkunst, our cofounders and editors—Carlos @carloskong_ and Genevieve @glipinsk—contributed a review of “Art Writing in Crisis” published in 2021 by @sternbergpress_official. The text thinks about what this supposed “crisis” in criticism is, what the “review” should do, and what kind of publishing landscape we want to see—with shout-outs to some publishers and outlets we admire and cherish❣️

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to making the exhibition "Stable x Dirt x Hermetic State" truly incredible. The overwhelming love and joy I experienced have left me feeling like I'm floating on a cloud. I would like to give a special shoutout to Krystal Mack for introducing me to this amazing group of people and for actively participating. I also want to thank my life partner, Vonne, for their invaluable support and for being a constant source of positivity. It brings me great happiness to have met new friends and become part of such a vibrant artist community.

Can’t tell you all how excited we are to announce the collaboration @dirt.dmv has cooked up with @sadiebarnette, @dykesday, @museofire, and @ciearaadams! We were invited by @stablearts to curate a happy hour event as a part of Sadie Barnette’s “New Eagle Creek Saloon”: a multi-sensory evening dedicated to Black queer worldbuilding. Including a DMV-inspired set from artist and DJ MUSE(O)FIRE (@museofire), comestibles from food futurist and designer Cieara Adams (@ciearaadams), and a feature of Hermetic State’s (@hermetic_state) recently published anthology "dykes day, a holigay," (@dykesday) the evening underscores the need and importance for spaces to connect. The event both celebrates the long and sustained history of Black queer communities, and imagines new forms of worldbuilding, such as what a holiday for lesbians can look, sound, feel, taste, and smell like.

An important part of this project was holding a conversation between @sadiebarnette and @dykesday before the event to chat about common threads in their work—stay tuned for the zine that features this beautiful dialogue featuring the publisher @hermetic_state, aka writer extraordinaire Fabiola Ching (@takoma_park_hottie), artist and author of the original manuscript, Mayah Lovell (@mayahlovell_art), and Sadie Barnette! The zine will also include some beautiful text from @ciearaadams and mix tracklist from @museofire 🌱
