November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month 🤍 Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK. Raising awareness of the signs and symptoms, and encouraging people to seek medical advice, can help save lives. 🔍 Look out for: • A cough that lasts 3 weeks or more • Feeling short of breath more often • Chest pain when breathing or coughing • Coughing up blood • Repeated chest infections • A hoarse voice that does not improve Most changes are not cancer, but getting checked early can make a real difference. How accessible are bus services in Cornwall? 🚌 Our new Substack article explores accessibility on buses and future reforms within Cornwall Council. We want to make sure disabled people’s experiences help shape the future of bus services. As part of this work, our Social Policy Officer, Lily, will be representing disabled people’s experiences and working with the council to help shape future services. We want to hear from you! 🗣️ What barriers do you face when travelling by bus? What would make bus services more accessible and inclusive? This could include: ♿ Inaccessible bus stops 🚌 Unreliable ramps or difficulties using priority spaces 🗺️ Poor information, timetables or journey updates 💬 Any other barriers that make bus travel difficult Your experiences matter. Young Onset Community - free activities for people living with dementia under 65 💜 Our Young Onset Community has a programme of free activities coming up this autumn and winter, offering opportunities to connect, relax, try something new and spend time with others. 🌿 OCTOBER 15 - Gong Bath 🕥 10:30am - 12pm 📍 Hidden Yurt, Penwith Pitch & Putt, Chenhalls Road, St Erth, Hayle, TR27 6HJ Join Aga from Intuitive Soul for a relaxing sound therapy session using crystal bowls, with gentle nourishment for body and mind. The Hidden Yurt is a peaceful space with a wood burner and blankets. Blankets will be provided. 🌳 NOVEMBER 6 - Connection & Adventure 🕚 11am - 2pm 📍 Tehidy Woods, Camborne Join us for a brunch get-together, a chance to have a coffee or tea, catch up and meet others, followed by a gentle walk around Tehidy Woods. It’s never just the car park. 🅿️ For many disabled people, cashless parking isn’t simply a different way to pay. It can raise questions about access to technology, barriers to using digital services and the independence people need to take part in everyday life. As more car parks move towards cashless payment this autumn, we want to hear from people with disabilities, health conditions or other access needs, as well as carers and families. 💬 Have you experienced barriers when using cashless parking? Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🩷 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - a time to raise awareness, encourage people to know the signs and symptoms, and highlight the importance of screening and early diagnosis. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Around 59,400 people are diagnosed each year, including around 59,000 women and 420 men. Around 1 in 7 women in the UK develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Screening can help detect breast cancer before there are any signs or symptoms. In England, women are routinely invited for NHS breast screening from age 50 until their 71st birthday, usually every 3 years. It’s also important to know your own breasts and be aware of changes. If you notice something that is not normal for you, speak to your GP. You should not wait for your next screening appointment. Today, our Learning Disability and Autism Team are at the While We Wait - Community SEND Support Day at St Erme Community Centre 💙 The event is for parents and carers of children and young people with SEND, as well as relatives, neighbours and professionals supporting families. There will be information, advice and support available from a range of organisations, including NHS Health Services, Cornwall Council Education and SEND Services, Children’s Social Care, Cornwall Parent Carer Forum, Cornwall SENDIASS and local voluntary and community organisations. Have you used one of Cornwall Council’s Cashless Car Parks yet? 🅿️ We want to hear from people with health conditions, disability or other access need as well as carers and families, who have experience of using the car parks since the move towards cashless payment this Autumn. We are gathering evidence about how the changes are working in practice and, in particular, whether they are creating barriers or affecting people’s independence and ability to access local places and services. We would like to hear from you whether your experience has been positive, negative or somewhere in between. 💬 For example: • Were you able to pay easily? • Did you need a smartphone, mobile data or banking app to pay? • What happened if you did not have a smartphone, bank card or suitable payment method? • Did poor or unreliable mobile signal cause a problem? • Did you find the payment machine, app or instructions difficult to use? • Did your impairment or access needs make the payment process more difficult? • Did you need help from somebody else to pay? • Did the change affect your independence? • Were you unable to park, or did you have to find somewhere else where you could pay? • Did the change mean you decided not to make the journey at all? • Have the changes affected where you are able or willing to travel? • What would make Cornwall’s parking arrangements more accessible and inclusive? 📩 You can share your experience by commenting on this post, sending us a direct message, or emailing us at hello@disabilitycornwall.org.uk. Your lived experience can help us understand what matters most and make sure disabled people’s voices are central to conversations about policy, services and change.
