Christmas markets turn us all into time travellers. Even though we may not be fully aware of it we are following traditions of our ancestors.

I am always at home in markets, but especially at Christmas. It is an iconic scene. The gathering gloom illuminated by lights and decorations. Laughter of people from afar chatting to locals. Children excited by the carousel, some seeing one for the first time. Men in top hats as shoppers and sellers often wear victorian garb.

Sadly many traders are not coming now due to covid, and brexit. We are all a little broken, a little bruised. But there is still an element of friendship, magic, and light.

Something to be cherished.

One way or another summer has been all about gardens. Refuge with nature keeping me sane.

Recent stop on the way home at Burford Garden Centre for their perfect coffee and lots of beauty and inspiration.

Dreaming of Autumn. Remember to put a bowl of water out please for birds, wildlife and stray cats. ( We have a crisis). Many dehydrated hedgehogs being cared for at rescues due to this heat. Support your local if you can, they receive no government funding. 🙏

Summer in our tiny garden. Little delights.

Every year the day flying Hummingbird Hawk Moths visit. I grow a lot of nectar plants to attract Moths, Hover Flies and Bees. The scent is glorious in the evening, a lot of large night moths come out and we have Bats. 🦇

I have collected Dragons since I was a child.

This silk dragon was found at a magical charity shop which never failed to disappoint. I am sure he was already old and wise when he came into my possession.

In my 30s while I was obtaining qualifications to work as a nutritionist and Bach Flower practitioner I also studied Dragons and have a certificate in Dragonology. 😁🐉🐲

Despite my years of student endeavour I have been unable to identify exactly what this exquisite little Dragon was created for.

I think he may be of Chinese origin as he has 4 toes. In Chinese symbols this represents nobility, officials of high rank or the aristocracy. His is the middle rank, just below 5 for the Emperor, and above 3 for ministers. I accordingly treat him with respect.

Korean Dragons are all 4 toed except for the Imperial Dragon. Something tells me this Dragon is not Imperial, though he is quite grand.

If there is anyone out there who might identify my Dragon friend, or talk him into telling me his name, please let me know!

Long overdue emotional visit to Cotswold Lavender on a wonderful morning with a refreshing breeze.

The glorious purple fields, that never forgotten scent of Yardley Lavender, so much part of the era we grew up in. Walking in the wild flower meadow reminded us of the much missed California prairies of home that we are unlikely to ever see again.

And millefleur, literally 'a thousand flowers' that I was obsessed with when I worked in Paris.

Fields of the essence of summer.

Thank you @cotswoldlavender, beyond beautiful. Great little shop, friendly staff, nice coffee - and highly recommend the lavender ice cream!

Hover Flies

I love them, they always seem so happy. So many this year they were landing on me, I had to walk slowly through them. I put water out for them, bees and birds, with a rock so bugs can get out and not drown.

Be careful to ensure water is in the shade.

Winged things have been feeding off this highly scented Valerian (Valeriana Officinalis) since May. The heat is too much though and my plants are wilting. They self seed, I will have even more next season.

I always drink loads of water because I have intestinal damage from celiac disease and cancer surgery. Yesterday I became dehydrated causing a flare. In extreme temperatures our stomach and bowel are affected and can become too dry because we perspire. Be careful, remember to drink water.

Staying in today with the cat and remaining on a liquid diet.

Flaming June

Frederic, Lord Leighton
1830 - 1896

Exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1895, the year before he died.

The beauty of the sleeping girl and intensity of her translucent orange dress held in the glowing golden frame are quite simply breathtaking. It is impossible to look away. The identity of the model has never been confirmed.

The tabernacle frame designed by Lord Leighton was removed and sold when pre-Raphaelite art fell from fashion, the painting was deemed less valuable than the frame and sold for a few pounds.

We are lucky that the painting was eventually found in the 60s and was bought by the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico who had the original frame recreated. She tours and if you check you may be able to see her in person.

I can't believe I have never posted about Flaming June before. I have absolutely loved her since first seen. It seems this year especially appropriate as June temperatures break records.

If you have not visited Lord Leighton's house in London and you love Victorian art it is a must.
