What a day.

It started with pouring rain, which had me staring out of the window thinking well, this could be interesting… 😂 But thankfully the skies cleared, Thornbury came alive, and before long the gallery was full of people.

We sold some paintings (always a good thing!), but genuinely, the best part of the day was the people. So many familiar faces came through the door simply to support us, alongside lots of new ones discovering the gallery for the first time. I had so many lovely conversations and it made me realise that this is exactly what I wanted from having a physical space.

The brilliant Love Thornbury Oktoberfest Market was happening at the same time, so the High Street was buzzing, and we even had a line of beautiful classic cars parked right outside the gallery. Not something I'd arranged, but I'll happily take the credit for the ambience. 😂

One of my favourite moments was cutting the ribbon with my dad, who had come all the way from Singapore. He has always been incredibly supportive of my various entrepreneurial ideas over the years and he even helped me come up with the name The Discerning Palette six years ago. It felt very special to have him there for this next chapter. Swipe to the end to see the little video of us cutting the ribbon.

We were also so pleased to welcome the Mayor of Thornbury, Helen Ball, who came armed with lots of brilliant advice and ideas for me.

Mostly, though, I just came away feeling incredibly grateful. Thank you to everyone who popped in, bought something, had a chat, brought friends, wished us luck or simply came to have a look at some art. Thank you also to all the people who couldn't make it down that day but have sent me kind words of support. I love you all! taken in Thornbury High Street by @discerningpalette

After six years of The Discerning Palette existing online, we finally have a real-life home, and we’d love you to come and see it.

Join us on Saturday 3rd October, 10am–4pm at 55 High Street, Thornbury. Come and have a wander, see the paintings in person, say hello to us and generally have a good nose around the new space.

There’ll be drinks, a few nibbles and, most importantly, LOTS of art.

Everyone is welcome. Bring a friend, bring the family, pop in for five minutes or stay for a proper browse.

We’d really love to see you there.

Hello, we're the Discerning Palette.

We’re Saira & Shanti - two friends who love art, but aren’t particularly interested in all the stuffiness that can sometimes come with it.

We started the Discerning Palette because we believe buying art should be fun, personal and accessible. You shouldn’t need an art degree, an enormous budget, or the right vocabulary to have something brilliant hanging on your wall.

We hunt down original art that makes us stop and look... from mid-century paintings and forgotten vintage finds to wonderfully odd, beautiful and intriguing pieces that deserve another life.

Some have famous names attached to them. Many don’t. We don’t think that matters nearly as much as whether you love looking at them.

Our aim is simple: to break down some of the barriers around buying and appreciating art, and help more people feel confident trusting their own taste.

Waiting by the Window (1948)’: A beautifully understated figurative painting, with its soft pastel palette, playful abstraction and expressive brushstrokes.

A little whimsical, a little mysterious, and full of soul. by @discerningpalette

There’s something wonderfully enigmatic about this painting.

‘In Her Own World (1984)’ is a gentle and delicate abstract figurative work, depicting a solitary figure turned away, seemingly lost in her own thoughts.

The beautiful interplay of colours, expressive brushstrokes and intimacy of the moment leave us wondering about her story.

Our latest Cederberg features pears and a pipe.

At the centre, a scalloped white bowl holds a cluster of elongated pears, their simplified silhouettes rising almost sculpturally from the composition. Alongside sits a halved pear, its creamy flesh punctuated by dark seeds and flashes of green, while a long white pipe stretches across the foreground.

The unusual pairing lends the scene a playful, slightly surreal quality, transforming familiar domestic objects into a carefully arranged study of shape and form.

I have such a soft spot for abstract figurative art, and ‘Alone with Thought’ might just be my favourite recent addition.

Am absolutely in love with its beautifully muted palette, delicate hints of blue and wonderfully expressive brushstrokes.

If you’d like more details, the listing is now up on our website, or feel free to drop us a DM. by @discerningpalette
