"There is a misconception of what is syncable."

Artists hear a lot of advice about writing for sync: Make your lyrics more relatable. Make them more universal. Artist manager and music supervisor Joel Gouveia's take is simpler: focus on making good music, and the syncs will find you.

On the Record, Joel also talks about the missed placement that pushed him to get his artists organized, and why growing your community slowly still matters most.

Trailer music supervisor Scenery Samundra (Euphoria, The White Lotus) curates our latest Let The Music Play playlist.

“I've always been obsessed with music,” Scenery tells DISCO. “I grew up going to punk shows in the Bay Area at 924 Gilman Street, eventually finding my way into college radio at KDVS. I just kept following the music path deeper and deeper and eventually learned that there's no end to it… I think that's what keeps me interested: the fact that music exploration is an infinite journey back in time, and no matter how much I learn I'm always discovering new things every day.”

Joel Gouveia is an artist manager, sync rep, and music supervisor based in Toronto. He also co-founded Sincerely Management, Fivepin Music, and Sellout.fm. That puts him on both sides of the sync process: pitching his artists for placements, and clearing tracks on tight deadlines as a supervisor.

In this conversation, Joel talks about what makes a pitch easy to license, why metadata matters so much when a song needs clearing, how he searches his catalog by lyrical theme, vibe, and sound-alike acts, and how he and his artists keep demos and final bounces in one place.

Year 3 of DISCO's Summer Party is in the books, and we had a blast celebrating our music supervisor community. The drinks were cold, the crate digging was hot. There was magic in the air, and a few lucky prizewinners went home $5K richer - or with a plane ticket to meet rights holders with us in Japan.
