it’s hard to talk about john collins without talking about the girl I was when we met. a few years out from the death of my mother, eager and awkward and feeling my way through the world. a chance encounter in a one off production course my last year at msu led me to spending the day with him and cornelius, walking away with a deep sense that my future would be intertwined with our connection.

six years later he would invite me to share his office at submerge with him, doing tours in the museum and other archival work.. “John how do I” “John what do you think” “John will you” and every time, the answer made me think deeper about the world and feel confident about my place in it. he was one of the first people to tell me that I was a leader, that I had a vision worth pursuing. in so many ways, navigating the dj world and nightlife as whole, is like experiencing adolescence again. understanding connection, loyalties, dramas, genius.. we would chat shit for hours and I always understood that our gossip sessions were imbibed with history and context from john’s years as a master dj and educator, a living memory box. he juxtaposed the tough “steel sharpens steel” mentality in Detroit and became a safe space for so many of us to explore our emotions.

when I got it the first text message the night he passed and so many more after, I knew that the best way to honor him wasn’t to succumb to my pain, but to reach out with love to his other “kids” and carry forth with the dignity and grace he shaped our world with. drinking Chardonnay tonight in his honor and jamming with jamea for my last guest appearance at groove night. by @discointelpro
