Hygrophorus chrysodon (Gold Dust Waxy Cap) Family: Hygrophoraceae (Waxy Cap Family) Order: Agaricales (Order of Gilled Mushrooms) 12.03.21

Skip on down to the bottom for some species ID tidbits.

Well hi everyone! It’s been exactly a year and a month since I observed this species for the first (and only) time, and nearly as long since I’ve posted anything on Instagram. Specifically, I’ve had these photos as a draft for just about that entire time. One of my ongoing goals is to work through my struggles with processing and posting my photos, both on iNaturalist and here. Just enough balance to create a sustainable system for myself. If you’re working on this too, I’m with ya! 🙇🏽‍♀️

In 2022, I saw too many mind-blowing and stunning mushrooms to keep track of. I travelled the region, country and new parts of the world documenting fungi and connecting with wonderful people in this field/community. I am humbled and proud of those experiences, and have a lot to show for it once I take the time to do the work. I look forward to sharing more with you all.

And now, a brief description of this species : This blinged out Waxy Cap can be most easily distinguished by the bright golden yellow fibrils in the center of the cap, along the cap margin and on the stipe, persisting around the apex (where the stipe meets the gills). While the Western NA species needs a new name, the etymology of “chrysodon” directly means golden tooth, aptly referring to the stylish ornamentation. You can see these specimens showing off the classic, thick waxy gills of the genus Hygrophorus. This species, though widespread, is not very common, and I am grateful to have been alerted of a city park patch, by my naturalist friend and local waxy aficionado @fish_narc

Cheers to 2023! If you got this far, I hope you find fungi this year that really tickle your fancy, preserve your passion, and stoke your curiosity 💛 taken in Olympia, Washington by @discomycete

Schizophyllum commune (Split Gill) Sphizophyllaceae (Split Gill Family) Agaricales (Order of Gilled Mushrooms) 12.08.21 🌀✨🔦

A stunning display of fluorescence on the gill edges under 365 nm ultraviolet light. @jackjohnsonn and I have been thoroughly enjoying our new tool/toy (thank you @damontighe & @alan_rockefeller for the recommendation) and were amazed to see Schizophyllum light up like so. I didn’t think this species could get any better but lo and behold. The last photo shows contrast of the deep red fluorescence of lichens on the tree bark, any organism with chlorophyll will emit a similar color under UV light.

Cuphophyllus russocoriaceus (Cedarwood Waxcap) Family: Hygrophoraceae (Waxy Cap Family) Agaricales (Order of Gilled Mushrooms) 11.20.21

The famed waxy whose epithet supposedly implies the smell of Russian leather. I think it smells more like a potently sweet woodsy incense. The cop that came to see what @species.i.see and I were up to laying in the moss beside the parking lot thought it smelled like cologne. Surprisingly, some folks don’t pick up much of an odor at all. It’s taken me years of studying fungi to remember to give them a sniff, and this year I’m realizing just how variable odor detection and interpretation is from person to person.

This mushroom is a slender beauty, recognized beside its odor by its lovely white decurrent gills that are relatively widely spaced. You can find them growing solitary or in small groups in mossy duff and mixed forests.

This species was described in Europe, while Hygrophorus lawrencei (syn. Cuphophyllus lawrencei) was described in the PNW, these two species appear macroscopically to be identical. Sequencing efforts show that both the European species and one that doesn’t match it are both found in WA. Whether or not the other is the true C.lawrencei, we aren’t exactly sure just yet.. stay tuned folks!

Entoloma medianox (Midnight Entoloma) Entolomataceae (Pinkgill Family) Agaricales (Order of Gilled Mushrooms) 10.24.21. Feat. a squad of adorable globular springtails

Found this beautiful patch of midnights with @jackjohnsonn and @thirtysecondcaterpillar right before midnight which felt very apt. They were growing at the famed Waxy Cap Hill, a hotspot spot for a wide variety of waxies and entos.

The caps showcase a feature I learned recently (thanks @species.i.see) “rivulose” describing the irregular and sinuous lined pattern on the cap. The slightly varying texture and color combination make it a little tricky to see with my impromptu night photography but it’s fun to notice new characteristics of mushroom each new season and year!

Atheniella autantiidisca (Candy Corn Bonnet) Family: Porothelaceae (Tubelet Family) Agaricales (Order of Gilled Mushrooms) 10.09.21

These lil cuties can be found in troops amongst duff, moss and conifer debris, brightening up dark forest understories. They can be recognized be their distinct color palette of orange, yellow and white and an almost translucent stipe.

Though formerly described as a Mycena and strikingly similar in appearance, it turns out they belong to an entirely different family, Porothelaceae, under the suborder Marsimiineae.

Leptonia serrulata group (Blue Edge Pinkgill) Family: Entolomataceae (Pinkgills) Order: Agaricales. 9.25.21.

The deep blue hues of this gorgeous Leptonia were tricky to detect under the dark canopy of old Olympic forests. This bunch was cozied up near the bottom of a large, heavily decayed log - growing from the wood. They can also be found growing in moss, duff and bare soil. This species group can be recognized by their finely scruffy caps and blue marginate gills (see last photo). Genetic analysis distinguishes the European, Eastern & Western NA species from one another despite sharing the same physical characteristics. Entoloma serrulatum is a synonym (1967) though the original name was Agaricus serrulatus (1818), a genus that nearly every gilled mushroom was handily plopped into for quite some time.

Pycnoporellus fulgens - Family: Fomitopsidaceae. Order: Polyporales (10.09.21) An old but vibrant specimen. Some mistake this species for Laetiporus species (Chicken of the Woods) but it can be distinguished by its fuzzy upper surface and large, irregularly shaped pores that sometimes appear teeth like. This was my favorite spotting yet, even though it nearly crumbled when I tried to get a closer look.

Entocybe trachyspora. Family: Entolomataceae. Order: Agaricales (10.09.21) My second time finding this species, both this season, and it sure is a delight. The cap leads to easy suspicion of Mycena until the silky-shiny stipe with a gradient of blue and vertical striations is revealed. A pale pink spore print and angular spores will confirm the family’s distinctive features.

Shoutout to @jackjohnsonn for the diligent microscopy coaching and @species.i.see for accompanying this lovely tromp in the woods + nudging me to post.

Scutellinia sp. (Eyelash cups) Pyronemataceae (Fire Cup Family)
Pezizales (Order of Truffles & Allies) 3.01.20

A freaky little group of orange-red cups commonly found growing on rotting wood and damp soil. They have abundant marginal hairs that resemble eyelashes as showcased on these tiny fresh fruits.

These are commonly identified as S.scutellata but the genus has recently been split and several species look almost identical. Microscopic examination is often required to differentiate them 🔬

Sarcoscypha coccinea (Scarlet Elf Cup) Sarcoscyphaceae (Elf Cup Family) Pezizales (Order of Truffles & Allies) 3.22.20

My only encounter with these stunning cups, just over a year ago. This species is easy to recognize with its vibrant scarlet coloration and pale tomentose outer surface with a short + stout stalk (though sometimes absent). The margin and shape of the cups can be very irregular like so and the flesh is thin and fragile. Other species of the genus are present in NA but not known to be in the PNW and are only distinguishable by their spore characteristics.

Pseudaleuria quinaltiana (Fuzzy Peach Cup) Pyronemataceae (Fire Cup Family)
Pezizales (Order of Truffles & Allies) 3.19.20

A rare and endemic species known only in Washington and Oregon. These tiny cups were growing on exposed soil of a disturbed hillside. They can be identified by their peachy coloration and thin hairs that are hyaline (translucent) when fresh. Peep the hairy little baby sandwiched between the bigger fruits! 🍑👼🏽

Found while escaping the deafening barrage of an impromptu roadside target practice. I didn’t have a tackle box and had to wrap one in a leaf and store it inside a littered water bottle to keep it safe for sequencing 🧬

Peltigera venosa (Fan Pelt) Peltigeraceae (Pelt Lichen Family) Peltigerales (Order of Pelt Lichens) 3.12.21

Another tiny Pelt that melts my heart. This species grows on soil amongst mosses in moist microclimates. It produces perfect little brown saucers that have ragged edges when young. These apothecia are abundant and marginal. The lobes are tiny (0.5-2cm), smooth and vibrant green. The undersides have pale to brown veins that are tomentose and erhizinate.

This is a tripartite lichen (Coccomyxa + Nostoc) with cephalodia appearing scattered amongst the veins. I think those dark green dots in the second photo may be them but I’m not positive 🤷🏽‍♀️
