Northwoods foray moments! Every event goes by far too fast! I miss everyone dearly the second I leave. And this year has by far been my favorite year 🍄💕 Had to memorate with @bethllanas95 with some waxy tattoos since this last event for me was all about waxy caps thanks to Lauren's research and passion for them! The Cuphophyllus to my Hygrophorus tattoo pair! Thank you all for a wonderful season! #mushlove and have a great week! #explore #fy #forage

(repost because a kind person pointed out the song I clicked on was actually AI.. and I don't mess with that ope) I am so busy getting ready for the Northwoods foray this weekend, but I wanted to share some photos from last weekend at Jackpine. It was a magical, transformative experience with old friends, new friends, and the Mycological family I've spent time with a lot the last couple weeks. I am so grateful among the craziness for all of the growth this year has brought me.💪🏻🦋💕 Huge shout-out to Stef for this event!!! I love when she plays the saw with her band, Sloppy Joe 🫠 I am even more grateful for the beautiful souls I've met and connected with this past month. Every single one has taught me something that I'll take with me for the rest of my life. What a great rejuvenating weekend to get ready to lock into the rest of the midwestern foraging season! #explore #mushlove

🗓️ 10TH - 13TH SEPTEMBER 2026 🍄 Northwoods Foray 2026 📍 Wisconsin, USA The annual Northwoods Foray has a reputation for being not only the greatest fungi foray in Wisconsin but one of the greatest fungi forays in all of North America. Each year, those in the know fly in from the far reaches of the hemisphere to experience the biodiversity hotspot that is the northern forest of Wisconsin. You want to see rare and beautiful species? This is the place to be this September. Hang out with other folks —of all experience levels— enchanted by the fungal world This year we will have planned workshops as well as forays for Friday and Saturday, and will feature two presentations, one Friday evening and another on Saturday evening. - Friday evening: Lauren Ré will present on the Waxycaps of Wisconsin! - Saturday evening: Stephen Russell, of MycoMap and MycoBlitz fame, will present to us on MycoMap and Fungal Conservation! We will have both unpaid and paid workshop options. The special-sign up/paid workshop options will all be scheduled so that you can go to a foray that day as well. EVENT REMINDER (TODAY); August Enviro-Wednesdays @ The Nature Place Wednesday August 5, 2026, 7:00 PM Mycology 101: Understanding the Fungi Around Us Fungi are one of the planet’s most diverse and dynamic groups of life. Despite growing interest among the public, science has only described about 1% of Earth’s estimated fungal species. Mycology, the study of fungi, offers curious naturalists a chance to discover a hidden world that exists in their own backyards. Join us to learn more about this fascinating field of study, including how fungi have impacted and driven humanity. We’ll also take a look at some local diversity of mushroom species you may encounter in Wisconsin and the La Crosse area and how you can learn more! Lauren Ré and Mariah Rogers are mycologists & nature educators based in La Crosse. They are master’s students at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse researching fungi and their genetic relationships, diversity, and ecology. They devote much of their free time to educational organizations including the UW-L Mycology Club and Wisconsin Mycological Society. They’re both endlessly passionate about sharing the joys and wonders of fungi and uplifting community science. Friends of the Marsh and The Nature Place co-host Enviro-Wednesdays. Programs are free, open to all ages 14+ with an adult.

Puccinia mariae-wilsoniae (Springbeauty Rust) Pucciniaceae (Rust Family) Pucciniales  Last Friday was Robigalia, the ancient Roman festival of rusts and blights. I did not sacrifice a dog to appease the gods, and thus Robigus unleashed an abundance of rusts on the following day.  I was on a walk through a beautiful bottomland forest with the local mycological clubs. Many old and new friends were in attendance, and it was a beautiful morning. The recent rains have caused the Black River to spill over its banks, flooding the wooded delta upstream from its confluence with the Mississippi. The path was lined with thousands of blooming springbeauties, and I carefully examined each patch in search of this creature.  When we reached the core of the bottoms, I struck gold. Suddenly rusts were everywhere, deforming the ever more numerous plants.

Biscogniauxia atropunctata (Spotted Canker) Graphostromataceae (Carbon Canker Family) Xylariales (Order of Carbon Fungi) As things begin to warm up in the Driftless, everything is Biscogniauxia and gravy. The sun is shining almost every day, and temperatures have become pleasant even for my frail Californian form. This past weekend i spent a lot of time on the bluffs, seeing what goes on during the tailout of the sleeping season. I attended a lovely foray with @uwlmycologyclub during which I found a gigantic fruiting of this stunning fungus.  This is a perennial fruit which surely lasted through the icy blasts of winter. It's very visually distinct, with a bright white stroma punctuated by the black mouths of its perithecia. Most similar applanate xylarioids are entirely melanized, with a stark black appearance like coal. This fungus is a parasite that mostly attacks oaks, causing a disease known as "Hypoxylon Canker".  It can infect healthy trees, but it's not typically the only factor leading to the death of the tree. It is a native species here in the eastern hardwood forests, and pathogenic fungi like this are essential for maintaining tree diversity and recycling nutrients.
