Join us for the opening of Cumbia de mi Tierra. Saturday April 11th 4-9pm @humanresourcesla Cumbia de mi Tierra is an art exhibit and installation that celebrates cumbia music from Mexico through ephemera, material culture, and art. When records of Afro-Colombian folkloric dance music took root in Mexico, a complex sound system-based culture began to grow from Mexico City to Puebla and the diaspora in New York, New Jersey and Los Angeles. Curated by Gary Garay, the exhibit brings together highlights from Jose Hernández’s vast collection of cumbia ephemera, photographs by Stefan Ruiz, and new work by Gary Garay with artist Yair Sarmiento. Through archiving, curating and creating work inspired by Hernández’s extensive collection, Garay tells a history not only of Mexican cumbia but also of Mexican print. Consisting of flyers, posters, stickers, sonidero business cards, mixtapes and cassette recordings of specific bailes from the 1980s and 1990s Mexico City the collection constitutes a counter-history of print and graphic design. With its wild appropriation of Looney Toons, Anime, Homies, and other visual references, this visual vernacular helped transform cumbia from a rural, folkloric, regional dance music into an urban, transnational, and modern soundsystem-based culture. We will have live performances by dance group Club Inspiración Mexico, Sonido La Rumba, El Tropical San Pancho, Dolores Y Su Conjunto, DJ sets by Ganas, El Kevin and Sonido Dolores. Hit+Run will also be silkscreening sonidero labels and logos live on T-shirts.

Listening to music and hanging out at Only Music in Rio is always an education! I spent the afternoon with @onlymusic_records @djgrandmasterraphael @ricardinho_dj @gellodj_only_music_ trocando ideas (exchanging ideas) and listening to a new test press together!

Founded by brothers DJs Ricardinho & Gello, Only Music is the one remaining funk record store in Rio. Ricardinho’s son, rising star music producer @jronoficial continues the family tradition in his studio above the shop.

I’m so proud of my friend and label partner @og_ganas for curating and bringing to life “Cumbia de Mi Tierra,” an exhibition based around Jose Hernández @_innovation_records_ deep collection of ephemera from Mexico City in the 1980s and 1990s. The opening party and screening of documentaries by @spaceprimo and @discos_rolas were awe-inspiring.

Come through the closing celebration with a serious pachanga with Sonido Pluma Cumbiambero, Sonido Dolores, Ritmo Santanero El Kevin, Ganas, Sonido Frequencia Chicana, and legendary CDMX dancers Las Japonesitas de la Panti!

Curated by artist Gary Garay, the exhibit brings together collector, Jose Hernández, photographer Stefan Ruiz, and artist Yair Sarmiento. Drawing on the extensive collection of Jose Hernández, Gary Garay tells a story of cumbia sonidera in Mexico through curation and the creation of new work based on this archive. Consisting of flyers, posters, stickers, sonidero business cards, and cassette mixtapes and cassette recordings of specific bailes from the 1980s and 1990s Mexico City constitute a counter-history of print and graphic design.

Inside Human Resources, an exhibition and performance space in Chinatown, cumbia sonidera arrives not as nostalgia, but as an incessant expansion and contraction of pressure — compressed sound, saturated color, and moving bodies insisting on visibility in a city where visibility is never neutral. In some spaces, it signals belonging; in others, it exposes some to racial profiling or other types of discrimination.

Presented by Más Éxitos and curated by artist and DJ Gary “Ganas” Garay, “Cumbia de Mi Tierra,” opens with that insistence. It is part exhibition, part archive, part dance floor, and part living infrastructure of memory and migration. Because it takes place in Los Angeles, it also reads as something more urgent. It is a counter-formation against uneven policing, immigration enforcement, and the everyday surveillance that has come to structure life in immigrant neighborhoods.
