I just accepted a tenure-track job in anthropology at Pomona College!! I am over the moon. I have taught there for the last five years as a visiting assistant professor, so Pomona already feels like home. I am thrilled to teach excellent students and to build a department alongside two brilliant, hardworking & kind colleagues. by @xandao_sound

Celebrating the second annual Día Nacional do Funk at Bangu Atlético Clube. The “first” baile funk, Baile da Pesada happen Seven classic soundsystems blasted funk from 1970s until the late 1990s. DJs included @cientistad @djgrandmasterraphael @adrianodjrj @phabyodj @djvitorgtr and other greats played historically curated sets! Listening to music and hanging out at Only Music in Rio is always an education! I spent the afternoon with @onlymusic_records @djgrandmasterraphael @ricardinho_dj @gellodj_only_music_ trocando ideas (exchanging ideas) and listening to a new test press together!

Founded by brothers DJs Ricardinho & Gello, Only Music is the one remaining funk record store in Rio. Ricardinho’s son, rising star music producer @jronoficial continues the family tradition in his studio above the shop.

Since my first show in Nov 2018, @dublab has given me a radically open space to experiment with the possible, to create musical conversations, and to learn—often live & on air!

I love being able to invite artists, scholars, and DJs visiting LA to come into the beautiful studio. I love having an excuse to interview and build shows with people I admire in their offices, homes, skype/zoom, & my kitchen. Every episode is archived on dublab’s awe-inspiring, treasure-trove website dating from the beginning of internet radio in 1999.

Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band are a multi-generational psychedelic powerhouse from rural Thailand whose ecstatic, amplifier-blown folk music has quietly become one of the most unlikely global cult phenomena of the last decade.

Hailing from Phetchabun Province, the group formed as a community celebration band — playing weddings, temple fairs, ordinations and village parades. At the center of their sound is the electrified phin, a traditional three-stringed Thai lute whose piercing, spiraling melodies cut through walls of percussion and portable PA distortion. What might begin as a local procession quickly transforms into something transcendent: hypnotic riffs cycling endlessly, rhythms pushing forward with relentless momentum, musicians of all ages locked into communal euphoria.

The world first encountered this raw electricity when a grainy YouTube video led to their 2014 international debut, introducing global audiences to a sound that felt both ancient and radically psychedelic. Critics struggled for comparisons — surf rock, molam, garage psych, ritual trance — but Khun Narin’s music defied easy categorization.

I’m so proud of my friend and label partner @og_ganas for curating and bringing to life “Cumbia de Mi Tierra,” an exhibition based around Jose Hernández @_innovation_records_ deep collection of ephemera from Mexico City in the 1980s and 1990s. The opening party and screening of documentaries by @spaceprimo and @discos_rolas were awe-inspiring.

Come through the closing celebration with a serious pachanga with Sonido Pluma Cumbiambero, Sonido Dolores, Ritmo Santanero El Kevin, Ganas, Sonido Frequencia Chicana, and legendary CDMX dancers Las Japonesitas de la Panti!

Curated by artist Gary Garay, the exhibit brings together collector, Jose Hernández, photographer Stefan Ruiz, and artist Yair Sarmiento. Drawing on the extensive collection of Jose Hernández, Gary Garay tells a story of cumbia sonidera in Mexico through curation and the creation of new work based on this archive. Consisting of flyers, posters, stickers, sonidero business cards, and cassette mixtapes and cassette recordings of specific bailes from the 1980s and 1990s Mexico City constitute a counter-history of print and graphic design.

He draws from a record collection built on childhood summers in Mexico; cumbia, the gems of Latin funk, Mexican disco, and a love for music that connects tradition and future.
