'2024 Student Arch. Project: The Garden Pavilion'
Bio-Brutalist reimagining of a pathway along the Diyabubula waterbody, based upon exploring the “Magic Realism” of the Sri Lankan artist Laki Senanyake’s (1937-2021) early batik style using only a single original work, the “Scenes from the Jungle” tapestry influenced by the art of Donald Friend.

The design is based upon exploring Laki’s visual storytelling by immersing the viewer within the story of this work, by exploring the different creatures at the waterhole of the batik, ducks, fish and leopards, as external manifestations of copper panels & sculptures, in motion through tellurics & tectonics, exploring the banyan tree on-site, climbing up to the canopy and descending to darkness to a climax of Laki’s batik invention, the wax funnel.

'Batik Concept Store for Sonali Dharmawardena' - Dulux by AkzoNobel Colours Award Winner 2024

A conceptual clothing store designed for Sonali Dharmawardena Batiks, set within a hypothetical colonial fort. The store sits within the existing stone ruins, occupying their empty spaces without cutting into, rebuilding, or otherwise tampering with the historic fabric.

The new structure nests within the ruins, filling their voids while allowing the original walls, arches, and fragments to remain dominant. A lightweight, transparent enclosure creates the shop within this inherited structure, placing old stone and new construction side by side without imitating one another.

Colour is used sparingly throughout the architecture, keeping the stone and glass largely restrained so that the batik garments provide the principal colour, pattern, and visual energy of the interior.

An heirloom rice museum situated within the agricultural landscape of Kadurugoda, Polonnaruwa, exploring the gradual disappearance of Sri Lanka’s traditional rice varieties in favour of shorter, faster, high-yielding grains. Rather than treating the paddy field as something requiring interpretation, the project recognises the landscape itself as the primary exhibit: a living record of cultivation, memory, and continuity.

Suspended above a fully functional paddy field, the museum avoids occupying or interrupting the land beneath it. Two steel-trussed pavilions, supported by crimson pylons reminiscent of the setting sun, hover above the landscape in deliberate contrast, drawing attention back to the philosophy and significance of the field itself.

A continuous pathway moves through the growing landscape, emerging around an open-air organic amphitheatre before dissolving back into the paddy. The journey culminates in an expansive view across acres of cultivated fields towards the railway beyond. Rather than romanticising agriculture or preserving heirloom rice as a relic of the past, the project imagines architecture as a framework for securing its future through continued cultivation, consumption, and collective memory.
