Greetings Community Partners and Changemakers!

What a remarkable year of amplifying voices and capturing culture across the District!

In 2024, we launched our new blog "The District Speaks," celebrated Howard University's centennial homecoming through our photo series, created "Talk of the Town" - a dedicated space showcasing the vibrant events and conversations shaping our community and covered the 2024 election!

Now it’s time for a much needed break…

Wishing you a joyful holiday season, and looking forward to amplifying more voices and creating positive change together in 2025!

“I had the privilege of visiting my family in Lebanon this past June. I was surrounded by so much love, culture, and beauty; it was a nearly indescribable feeling. I felt comfort—I felt at home. I look back to my visit now and wonder: how much of what I remember will be the same by the time I return?”

“1 Year of Genocide: A Path to a Peaceful Future” is an opinion piece by Rabeh Ramadan that explores the conflict between Israel and Palestine in the Middle East. He argues that the suffering occurring in Gaza is unconscionable, and very deliberate by the Israeli government. He explains how his family in Lebanon is now in harm’s way, and offers solutions to establish a Middle East free of future conflict. For more, please read the entire piece at districtlyspeaking.com, under the blog section.

In celebration of Howard University’s 100th homecoming, Districtly Speaking attended the ninth annual Lavender Reception – an event centered around amplifying awareness and activism for the LGBTQIA+ community, and awarding scholarships for students who advocate for inclusion and justice. This event was truly meant to be a safe space for the entire HU community to celebrate and spread joy, regardless of identity.

We spoke to Jay Jones, Howard University’s first transgender student body president, to gather what the Lavender Reception truly means to her and any advice she may have for those struggling with their identity.

Our photo series, “There’s No Place Like Home(Coming): A Century of Legacy at Howard University,” captured the essence of HU’s historic 100th homecoming. The celebratory experience featured an array of talent, music, fashion, and dance and honored unity, joy, and, most importantly, love. It brought together people of all ages and backgrounds, making it a family reunion of current Howard students, alumni, and friends to celebrate the university that gave so many a place to thrive and others a place to appreciate Black excellence. Relive the experience through our lens and immerse yourself in HU’s influential legacy.

Districtly Speaking was truly inspired by the “Moda, Mercado + Música” event in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, as it shed light on a community that is often underrepresented in our media. The celebration featured beautiful dance performances, markets, and an unbelievable fashion show. Rosa Maria Rodriguez, founder of RossemarysCreations, designed all the clothing in the fashion show.

We spoke with Ms. Rodriguez about her journey and desire to spread the art of fashion to the next generation, along with discussing what inspires her work. taken in Washington D. C. by @districtspeaks
