Some highlights from my performance at Soundshred. 🎶

This was only my second ever live production performance! The first was two years ago, for International Women’s Week (through @createdefinerelease Process program).

Why such a big gap? Well.. life happened. Job redundancy, going freelance, starting a business.. and all the anxiety and stress that came with it. Music making was put on pause while I found my feet.

So it was huge for me to be invited by @metasamasoundsystem to perform live again last Friday, and play a 30 min set of my original music with keys improv + a lil percussion surprise!🪘

Honestly I was blown away by the response. 🥹 People dancing and clapping along. A couple who heard the music from outside and came in to see what was happening.

THANK YOU to everyone who came, listened, danced, cheered, and supported. ❤️🙏🏻

This gig reminded me just how much I love music and performing live.

Also huge props to the other artists who also came and did their thing! Inspired. 🙌🏼

I did it! My very first public gig as a solo artist performing my own music! 🥳💖✨

If the previous weekend’s class performance was scary/exciting, this public gig was petrifying AND stressful AND exhilarating. In summary - I loved it! And I am still pinching myself to believe it actually happened and wasn’t a dream. 🥹

The gig was only confirmed 4 days before the event - which meant I had 4 days to prepare/create my 20 minute set (I only had 1 song so far - the one I performed the previous weekend)!

But I threw myself into the work… and I did it! I spent at least 25 solid hours working, prepping, creating & practicing for this set. It was A F*K TON of work and it was exhausting. It was more challenging than my actual day job as a web developer, so it is crazy to me how little artists are paid vs how hard they work (but that’s a whole other topic).

I learnt a lot from this experience - about my own strength, capability and creativity. The power of believing in yourself. And the importance of friends who support you. I am super grateful to all my friends who came to support. Much love! I only wish we could have taken a group photo after to commemorate! ❤️🙏🏻 @gtvid @gander.at.philander @r.liakike @yeetingliu @soopa_chan @damocles90 @optimusfunk

Last night’s premiere of Behind The Scene waacking documentary has got me thinking back to some of my favourite memories during the last 15 years journey with this dance.

I’m sharing this footage from 2019 because of the natural joy it captured. Me, relaxed, happy, in the moment with the music. Its always been about jamming in the club for me. Moving because the music calls me to move. 💃🏻

I had a brief few years of battling this style, but it was never somewhere I could fully express myself. The place you could find the real me was on the dance floor. I discovered myself at nights like Funk Off, Madame Jojo’s and The Village. This is where many of us UK “OGs” found ourselves in this style.

It still feels weird to be called an OG but I suppose I was there from (almost) the beginning! My very first waacking class was actually with @karou_mendy in 2010 (where the style instantly resonated with me), followed closely by the waacktitioners first company workshop, followed by Tyrone’s first UK intensive and then many a fun sunday at @ladyvenusdance class at Pineapple dance. How has it been 15 years?

I know I’ve been pretty quiet in the community (age kinda does slow you down.. but you can still find me occasionally getting down in the club!) I have so much love and respect for the younger gen carrying this torch and keeping the flame alive in the UK like @disconnectionjam @mysstruwaack @angentaa @londonwaackingmovement. 💖

Waking up to the silence,
To the lack of your presence.

No little click-clack of your footsteps,
No movement on the bed
As you creep up quietly,
Always knowing when we were awake.

No soft nuzzle against my arm,
No gentle tap of your paw,
No requests for rubs and ear scratches.

Just the emptiness of a bedroom
That once held your small, warm, furry body
And larger-than-life presence.

Mornings are the hardest
Because I wake and remember once more,

Today I felt inspired to train and just… express myself in waacking again. 💃🏻

I used to go to an empty gym studio and train on my own a lot when I first started learning this style (some 10-15 years ago). It’s been a while since I’ve done this.. but here we are…

Felt good to reconnect. 💖

I know my interests seem eclectic - I dip my toes in many worlds. For me they are all just different languages through which I express myself creatively. Whether that’s music, dance, writing or anything else.
