Finished ✅ Thrity Umrigar’s Everybody’s Son is a gripping and emotionally layered novel that explores the complexities of race, privilege, and identity.

It starts with Anton, a young Black boy whose mother, Juanita, is incarcerated after leaving him alone for a week in their apartment. What begins as a case of systemic neglect—a Black mother punished by a system designed to fail her—quickly turns into a carefully orchestrated adoption by a wealthy white couple with haunting moral and ethical implications.

This book is not a comfortable read. It forces readers to confront how race and privilege shape issues of justice and belonging in America. It’s an intimate and unsettling reminder that the personal is always political. by @diversebooks

Just finished A Girl Within a Girl Within a Girl by Nanda Reddy. Got to sit and discuss the book with @nandareddyauthor at @kewandwillow books this weekend.

It’s such poignant, timely and necessary account of the sometimes harrowing experiences of immigrants looking for better futures, the expectations vs realities of the American dream, the pressures placed on immigrants to provide and sustain their families and a simultaneous uplifting and critique of Guyanese culture. The language, colloquialisms, memories, nostalgia, wonderings, feelings, themes throughout the book were deeply relevant and relatable. Has anyone else read it?

Grab a signed copy of the book at Kew and Willow while supplies last. If you don’t happen to get one, I got you. Doing a book giveaway of one signed copy on @diversebooks this week!!! ♥️ taken in Kew and Willow Books by @diversebooks

Books 1-4 explores themes of identity, resilience, and societal constraints. The Story Hour by @thrity_umrigar examines South Asian immigrant experiences in the U.S. through mental health and cross-cultural friendships. The Henna Artist and The Secret Keeper of Jaipur by @thealkajoshi highlights class, gender, and ambition in mid-20th century India. The Lion Women of Tehran by @marjankamali7 navigates Iranian history, revolution, and women’s struggles amid political change. Across all stories, oral histories, secrets, and cultural traditions shape the protagonists’ identities as they challenge patriarchy, class divides, and societal expectations.

The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan and I’m Glad My Mom Died by @jennettemccurdy both explore the crushing weight of societal and parental expectations placed on women, particularly in the roles of motherhood and daughterhood. Chan’s novel presents a dystopian world where mothers are judged and punished for failing to meet impossible standards, while McCurdy’s memoir reveals the real-life emotional and psychological control exerted by her abusive mother. Both narratives expose the damaging effects of perfectionism, control, and societal scrutiny, highlighting the struggle for autonomy and self-worth. Whether through the lens of fiction or memoir, these stories underscore the painful consequences of a system—or a parent—that demands women sacrifice themselves to be deemed “good enough.”

These were my faves for January in no particular order. Happy Reading!!! by @diversebooks

ADULT RECS - A little of what I’ve been reading! Heavy focus on Palestinian resistance/diaspora 🇵🇸 and 20th century Iran 🇮🇷 this month!! (Slide 2-6)

Many of these books center women of various generations who fall in love, defy, resist, dream, transcend and evolve despite experiencing loss, abuse and oppression due to their political landscapes and social circumstances 🥲

A beautiful story about a Palestinian family forced from their homes as Israeli occupation takes them to a refugee camp. Oraib, like many Palestinians, cultivate olive trees around the camp, a crop that ties them to the land and gives them sustenance. She learns and understands that preserving the trees and the land is synonymous with preserving her culture and identity. After she is forced to leave again, she makes promises to come back and take care of her trees and hopes for a future that is free. For Palestinians like Oraib, this story is never ending, but their determination for liberation and a future free from colonialism remains steadfast. by @diversebooks
