These beautiful books are for my granddaughter. She reads chapter books now, but these picture books have depth and will deepen her empathy. Her mind will not be colonized. When Yuyi found a home in a world of books, I cried and wrote my granddaughter a note. #Books are life.

Award-winning novelist Julian Winters chatted with us about his sophomore YA novel, How to Be Remy Cameron, which continues to garner praise in its early release into the world. Winters discusses why Remy Cameron's story is personal, how he designed the character, the impactful advice that his agent and editor gave him, how music helps him defeat writer's block, how he overcame his doubts about writing in first-person for the first time, how he's grown as a writer since Running With Lions, the types of shows Remy Cameron would like, how fan-fiction changed his life and more! (I even accidentally called Winters Remy at one point!) Check out part 1--link in our bio!!

Last week, we highlighted the need to increase diverse books in our school/class libraries or curricula and examined the demographics of the population that you serve. 📊⠀
⠀
So what’s next?⠀
⠀
A book audit.⠀
⠀
😯 I know that sounds intimidating…but basically, a book audit is when you take an inventory of your books in light of specific characteristics, such as the ethnicity of the protagonist.⠀
⠀
You could use this helpful tally sheet from @sfpsmom (bit.ly/DiverseLibraryInventory) or create your own in Google Sheets or Excel. Including the titles of the books is optional. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, just do the tally marks. The point is to identify whose voices are being represented through the books.⠀
⠀
After you’ve gone through your school/class library and/or curricula, total up each column.⠀
⠀
Now, sit with your data.⠀
⠀
👉🏽 What patterns emerged? ⠀
⠀
🗣 Whose voices are the loudest? Quietest?⠀
⠀
🤔 How does this data compare with the demographics noted last week?⠀
⠀
⭕️ What gaps need to be filled?⠀
⠀
These are hard questions. Feelings may arise that may not feel too good. Remember that diversifying your library/curricula is important work. We know better. Now we have to do better.⠀
⠀
Next week, we will explore some notable nuances to consider when examining diverse books. Hope to see you then! ❤️💛💙💚🧡⠀

It Ain’t So Awful, Falafel is written by @firoozeh_dumas, who is originally from Abadan, Iran. After reading this books, I need to read her other books, like, yesterday. Many of the experiences of Zomorod, known as Cindy, capture moments in Dumas’s life growing up. In her author’s note, Dumas says this text is semi-autobiographical.
.
The book: Cindy is going into sixth grade and new for the fourth time in her life, now residing in Newport Beach, California. She does well in school and eventually comes into a group of friends who support one another. This story tells the tale of her middle school life in the late 1970’s when tensions between the US and Iran are getting tighter due to protests, revolutions, and governmental hostage situations in Iran. Cindy is lovable, quirky, goes about solving problems maturely, and has a solid group of friends who care for and support one another in a positive way. Her perspective is so important and valuable, and I adored how the character of Carolyn, Cindy’s best friend, remained open minded and willing to learn all about Cindy, her family, and her Iranian culture. Plus, I learned a ton about US-Iranian history throughout this novel that I wasn’t even aware of before, and I love that Dumas gives additional information and resources in the back of the book for further research opportunities! Definitely a new favorite! .

I know you all remember the Scholastic Book Fair coming to our schools when we were kids and getting the coolest posters, pencils, erasers..oh and books 😂And getting the flyers every month to order from?
Now, on the other side of the desk, I get these flyers and I hesitate to pass them out because most of the time my kiddos get upset or say “my parents can’t buy me anything”. Sometimes they have saved money to buy a snack after lunch in the cafeteria and they choose to buy a dollar book from the Scholastic flyer instead. Other times, as a “reward”, I try to buy some of the books for my kiddos.

Well, here’s the super cool idea (sorry I ramble so much before getting to it)
Scholastic Book Flyers have books that only cost $1. My goal is for all of my students to be able to choose a $1 book each month of the school year to take home with them. That’s $10 per child for the entire school year (August-May)! Or, for $11, they can choose an extra, special, book during their birthday month 😊
I have 22 students this school year, so that means I’m hoping I can find 22 sponsors 😊😍 If you’re interested in sponsoring a student in my class so they can get a $1 book every month of the school year (and a special one on their birthday!) Comment below with a number between 1-22. That will match you with a student in my class. 😊

You can send a $10 (or $11 for an extra birthday book) check written out to Scholastic Book Club to:
Erica Rimbert c/o Pinecrest Elementary
313 South 9th Street
Immokalee, FL 34142

Or you can send via:
Venmo(@Erica-Rimbert)
Cashapp ($EricaRimbert)
Paypal (PayPal.me/mrsrimbert)
The student (via the number 1-22) that you chose will keep in touch during the school year and let you know what books they chose, what they liked, etc.! 😊

Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, for helping to foster a love of reading in these amazing kiddos. ❤️#teachersofinstagram #iteachsecond #iteachtoo #scholasticbookfair #scholasticbooks #scholasticbookclubs #scholastic #featuredteacherfriday #bookstagram #classroomlibrary #classroombookaday #everychildmatters #everychilddeservesavoice #read #2ndgradeteacher #2ndgradeteachers #2ndgraderocks #2ndgrade #florida
