Excited and honored to announce that I’ll be presenting at the 2027 CPSE Excellence Conference in Orlando, Florida!

The Missing Tactical Layer: Why Firegrounds Break Down

March 18, 2027
2:30–3:30 PM ET
Caribe Royale Orlando

The fireground rarely fails at the strategic or task level. It fails in the space between them.

Looking forward to sharing key concepts from The Missing Tactical Layer, highlighting the importance of tactical supervision, coordination, accountability, and firefighter safety.

Thank you to the Center for Public Safety Excellence for the opportunity to be part of this year’s conference!

See you in Orlando!

I’m honored to have been selected to present at the 2027 Virginia Fire Rescue Conference in Virginia Beach.

Even better, I’ll have the opportunity to deliver “The Missing Tactical Layer: Why Firegrounds Break Down” twice on Tuesday, February 16.

I’m looking forward to bringing this program to Virginia and sharing the concepts, lessons, and experiences behind it with fire service professionals from across the Commonwealth and beyond.

Thank you to the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association and Professional Development Committee for selecting me to be part of the 2027 educational program.

What does a thermal imaging camera tell you during a 360?

More importantly, what is it NOT telling you?

Thermal imaging is one of the most powerful tools on the fireground, but only if firefighters understand how to interpret the image and apply it to their decision-making.

Every thermal image tells a story.

The question is: can you read it?

That’s what Decoding the Thermal Environment: Tactical Thermography for the Fire Service is all about.

I’m honored to have my Executive Fire Officer capstone research featured by @firehousemagazine as part of its EFO Research Brief collaboration with the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program.

My research, “Identifying Competency Gaps in the Civil Service Promotional Process,” focuses on something I’ve become increasingly passionate about throughout my career: the difference between preparing someone to pass a promotional exam and preparing them to actually lead once they receive the badge.

A sincere thank you to @petermatthews214 and the team at Firehouse for the opportunity, for believing in the value of this research, and for helping bring EFO research to the broader fire service.

Definitely a proud moment seeing this work published.

Passing the test should be the beginning of the transition, not the entirety of the preparation. taken in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey by @divisioncommandtraining

There are days when this job can frustrate you. There are days when certain things can wear you down and make you question why you care as much as you do.

But then there are moments like this.

I’ve wanted to wear the Elizabeth Fire Department patch since I was a kid. I grew up around this job, and even after all these years, I still take a tremendous amount of pride in being an Elizabeth firefighter. I try not to ever lose sight of what it meant to me to finally put that patch on my shoulder.

Yesterday, my brother worked a swap on my shift and had the opportunity to work with Rescue 1. Seeing him standing there in front of that rig, even if it was only for one tour, was one of those moments that brought everything back into perspective for me.

This job is bigger than any one of us. It was here before us, and it will be here long after we’re gone. The uniform, the patch, the companies, and the traditions we inherit deserve to be treated with respect. We owe that to the people who came before us, the people working beside us, and the people who will eventually take our place.

Yesterday was a good reminder of that.

Proud of my brother. Proud of my family’s history in this department. And despite the rough days, still damn proud to be an Elizabeth firefighter.

The legacy continues. taken in City of Elizabeth Fire Department by @divisioncommandtraining

Wednesday night, Division Command Training had the opportunity to work with the members of the @newprovidencefire for a drill night delivery of Decoding the Thermal Environment: Tactical Thermography for the Fire Service.

The class was highly engaging from start to finish. We worked with multiple brands and models of thermal imaging cameras, discussed their capabilities and limitations, and put them to work during hands-on evolutions to better understand what the TIC is actually showing us in the thermal environment.

Having multiple cameras available for side-by-side comparison generated some great discussion and valuable feedback from the members.

A special thank you to @john_sigs Chief Signorello, @drewvignali Deputy Chief Vignali, and all the members of the New Providence Fire Department for the invitation, hospitality, and participation throughout the evening.

We appreciate the opportunity to train with you and look forward to working together again in the future. taken in New Providence Volunteer Fire Department by @divisioncommandtraining

Tuesday night, Division Command Training had the opportunity to work with the members of the Kenilworth Fire Department for a drill night delivery of Decoding the Thermal Environment.

We started in the classroom breaking down thermal imaging fundamentals, image interpretation, apparent temperature, limitations, and how to use the TIC as a decision-making tool on the fireground. From there, we moved outside and put those concepts to work with the Palmer dollhouse, allowing members to see fire behavior and thermal conditions develop in real time through the camera.

A great night of discussion, hands-on training, and engagement from the Kenilworth firefighters.

Thank you to the Kenilworth Fire Department for the invitation and hospitality. We appreciate the opportunity to train alongside your members and look forward to working together again. taken in Kenilworth, NJ Fire Dept. and Rescue Squad by @divisioncommandtraining

A huge thank you to @firehouse_dalmatian_prints for the awesome care package!

Really appreciate you guys taking the time to send over the patches, challenge coins, stickers, and some extra swag. The fire service is a small world, and gestures like this are a great reminder of the brotherhood and relationships that make it special.

The Union Station 2 gear looks great and will definitely be displayed with pride.

Thanks again to the crew at Firehouse Dalmatian Prints. Much appreciated!

September 11, 2001.

Twenty five years later. This photo is especially personal to me. My father, Deputy Chief Lathey Wirkus (ret.), then Captain of Rescue Company 1 with the Elizabeth Fire Department, searching the pile at Ground Zero.

Like so many fire departments throughout our region, members of the Elizabeth Fire Department responded that day without hesitation, going where they were needed and doing what firefighters do.

For me, this picture has always represented far more than one moment in time. It represents service, duty, and brotherhood. This was a generation of firefighters who witnessed something unimaginable and simply went to work. taken in Ground Zero by @divisioncommandtraining

Never did I think I’d see my name on the same flyer as Ray McCormack. What a humbling and exciting opportunity.

A huge thank you to Carlos Lopez @clopez19_ with Galls for putting this together, and to @chief27a Chief Krushinski and the @eastfranklinfd East Franklin Fire Department for opening their doors and hosting us.

I’m very much looking forward to presenting “The Missing Tactical Layer: Why Firegrounds Break Down” alongside Ray and his presentation, “True Values of a Firefighter.”

If you’re in the area, why not come out for a night of FREE fire service training? Great conversation, light refreshments, and giveaways sponsored by Galls.
