🚒 Fireground Leadership | Incident Command 🎯 Chief/Co. Officer Tactical Trng📍 NJ 🔥 “Where Strategy Meets Tactics” 📧 [email protected]

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Coming October 16th

The fire ground isn’t linear - and neither are people.
If you’ve ever had a plan fall apart mid-call, comment .

That’s not failure. That’s real life showing up.
What Nick said hit hard:
Train for the next problem, not just the first one.
Talk before the call, so the cab isn’t silent when it gets real.
The calm voice in the room can reset the whole scene.
That’s why mentor talk, kitchen-table talk, and honest debriefs matter so much.

You’re not just learning tactics - you’re building the mental Rolodex that keeps you from freezing when the job changes fast.
If this one made you think, send it to your crew.

Why it works: It hooks with a relatable high-stress truth, then gives practical fireground mindset value that people will save and share.

Winning an election doesn’t automatically make you a leader. Being well liked, sharing a few beers, and getting along with everyone are great qualities, but they won’t make the tough decisions for you when things go sideways. If you’re going to accept the responsibility of leading firefighters, you owe it to them to keep improving. Read a book, attend a class, listen to a podcast, study tactics, or learn from those around you. Whatever it is, never stop learning. Nobody expects you to know everything, but your firefighters deserve someone who’s willing to put in the work. Be a good person, be approachable, and enjoy the brotherhood, but remember, popularity might win you an election, preparation earns you the right to lead.

The firefighter mindset goes beyond the fireground. It’s about thinking ahead, staying composed under pressure, looking out for your crew, and constantly pushing yourself to improve. These traits aren’t developed overnight. They’re built through training, experience, discipline, and dedication. Nobody is perfect, but there’s always room to be better than you were yesterday.

The standard you set for yourself matters.

Just because you’re driving the truck doesn’t mean your responsibilities begin and end at the turntable.

The truck company chauffeur plays a critical role in fireground operations. Proper apparatus positioning, setting up the aerial, and ensuring the equipment is ready for use are all priorities. But once those responsibilities are addressed, what’s next?

Depending on staffing, apparatus capabilities, and fireground conditions, the chauffeur may be in a position to assist with additional outside truck company functions.

Throwing ground ladders, assisting with exterior ventilation when coordinated with fire attack, improving access and egress, or helping establish a secondary means of escape are all tasks that can make a difference.

The key is understanding your assignment and knowing when you’re needed at the apparatus. If the aerial is operating or conditions require someone at the controls, that’s where you belong. But when the situation allows, don’t overlook opportunities to contribute.

A good truck company chauffeur knows their apparatus. A great one also understands the bigger picture of the fireground.

Train your chauffeurs to be more than just drivers. Teach them apparatus placement, building access, laddering priorities, and how their actions support the overall operation.

Don’t just drive the truck. Be part of the truck company. #raisethestandard

We’ve got modern fire science, modern construction knowledge, better PPE, better apparatus, better tools, better communications, and more information at our fingertips than firefighters before us could have imagined.
⠀
We have the capability to operate smarter, safer, and save more lives.
⠀
So why is “that’s how we used to do it” still treated like a tactical credential?
⠀
Respect the firefighters who came before us. Learn from them. Honor their sacrifices.
⠀
But remember: there’s no grandfather clause for horrible tactics.
⠀
Tradition should shape our culture, not handcuff our progress.
⠀
Keep learning. Keep adapting. Keep earning your stripes.

“I wanna see everyone eat, even if not at my table.”

That’s bigger than a quote to me. It’s a mindset.

Someone else succeeding doesn’t take anything away from you. Someone else getting the opportunity, earning the promotion, building the business, publishing the book, teaching the class, or chasing their dream doesn’t make your accomplishments worth any less.

There’s enough room for all of us to win.

Sometimes you’ll be able to give someone a seat at your table. Other times, your job might simply be to encourage them, make an introduction, share what you’ve learned, open a door, or point them toward the table where they belong.

And sometimes you just need to stand back and cheer when they build a table of their own.

Leadership isn’t about collecting followers or keeping opportunity to yourself. It’s about developing people who eventually don’t need you.

I want to see good people succeed.

Even if we wear different patches.
Even if we work for different organizations.
Even if we run competing businesses.
Even if we teach different classes.
Even if their path looks nothing like mine.

Work hard. Build something. Take the chance. Chase the dream.

And when you finally get a seat at the table, don’t forget the people still looking for theirs.

I wanna see everyone eat, even if not at my table.

There’s a reason the best athletes in the world still practice the same fundamentals they learned when they were kids.

At the highest level, it isn’t always about doing something more complicated. It’s about doing the simple things with precision, intensity, and consistency.

So what makes the fire service any different?

Too often we convince ourselves that the basics are beneath us. We want the complicated drill. The big scenario. The once in a career incident. Meanwhile, we overlook the skills we may need tonight, tomorrow, and multiple times next week.

Stretching the line. Throwing ladders. Forcing doors. Search. Pump operations. Size up. Communication. Tool work. The fundamentals still matter.

That doesn’t mean we stop training for the difficult or unusual incidents. All training has value. But our training programs should reflect our departments, our staffing, our equipment, our buildings, and the incidents we actually respond to.

There’s nothing flashy about mastering the basics. There doesn’t need to be.

Master the basics. Then build from there.

Interested in bringing Tri State Fire Training in for a fundamentals drill night? We can work with your department to build a night around the skills your members actually need. Reach out to us and let’s get something on the schedule. #raisethestandard

Before you flow in the burn rooms, the hallways, and on the jobs, get eyes on that stream. Know how it’s supposed to look. Feel it. Read it.

If something’s off and the moment gives you space, the line is already telling you a story.
