There’s a moment that happens in almost every class. The moment someone stops to look at what they’re making and realizes:

“Wait... I actually made this.”

That’s the empowering part I love. 🧡

Maybe it happens while shaping a bowl on the lathe or while finishing your first ring. Could be after demystifying woodworking tools or a sewing machine. And I really enjoy seeing a kid proudly carrying their project out the door to show off.

Whatever brings you in, that feeling never gets old.

✨ From Vision to Reality: Design, Craftsmanship & Inlay ✨

Some projects begin with experience. Others begin with a vision.

Join us on October 25 from 5-7 PM for an evening exploring how makers turn ambitious ideas into finished projects. Woodworking instructor Seatonn will share stories of members who started with little experience but a clear goal, and how learning, persistence, and problem-solving helped bring those ideas to life.

We’ll also be joined by Michelle, who will demonstrate her eye-catching iridescent wood inlay technique and show how decorative details can add beauty, personality, and visual impact to woodworking projects.

Whether you’re dreaming up your next project or looking for ways to elevate your craftsmanship, you’ll leave inspired and full of ideas.

Aaron’s always got tricks up his sleeve. 🪄

One of our favorite moments from Fall Fest was watching kids discover that 3D printing can feel a little bit like magic.

If you know a young maker who loves creating, problem solving, and seeing digital designs come to life, we have Kids Intro to 3D Printing and Design classes coming up on October 14th and November 18th from 5:30-8:30PM for kids ages 8-17 years old. We also have an adult class Oct 12th from 6-8:30PM.

Sometimes all it takes is one project to spark a lifelong interest.

Halloween costumes are one of those projects that can be as simple or as creative as you want to make them.

For this maker, it meant sewing a custom ghost costume for her son, complete with a handmade “BOO” on the back. 👻

There’s something special about creating something yourself, especially when it’s for someone you care about. The finished costume is great, but the memory of making it together might last even longer.

If you’ve been thinking about making your own Halloween costume this year, the DIYcave has sewing machines, workspace, and a community of makers ready to help bring your ideas to life.

We also have an Introduction to Sewing class coming up on October 12th, and there’s just one spot left!

Fall Fest is over, but we’re still smiling.

We had so many fantastic conversations, met so many creative people, took more selfies than we can count, and watched countless people light up as they discovered everything from the rock saw and kayak to the 3D printer and projects from around the Cave.

More than anything, we loved hearing about the ideas, projects, and skills you’re excited to explore next.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth, shared a laugh, asked a question, or simply came to say hello.

This is our recommended route for the weekend

Come visit us downtown at Fall Fest on the intersection of Wall and Minnesota, then swing by the shop for a tour of the makerspace. Our stewards love showing visitors around and sharing what our community is creating.

Afterward, head out back to @bevelbeer for a drink, some food, and a little patio time in the sunshine.

Some projects take an afternoon. Others become a journey. 🛶

For more than a year, DIYcave woodworking instructor Steve Shank has been carefully building this stunning cedar strip kayak, hand-fitting roughly 140 cedar strips to create a modern version of the Micro Bootlegger design. Inspired by classic wooden speedboats of the 1920s, this kayak blends craftsmanship, patience, and a whole lot of passion.

This weekend at Fall Fest, you’ll have the chance to see the latest stage of the build, now sporting fresh fiberglass that highlights the natural beauty of the cedar beneath.

Stop by to see the kayak up close, ask Steve about the build process, learn about strip-built boat construction, and get inspired to create something of your own!

Sometimes all it takes is seeing what’s possible to start your next project.

Ann has the large rock saw up and running and has been busy practicing cuts on rocks of all shapes and sizes. She’s currently slicing up to 6 inches tall and 8 inches wide with the possibility of cutting up to 10”.

Misty brought in a piece of jasper this week, and once it was slabbed, the whole stone transformed. Slabbing reveals the hidden colors, patterns, and wild complexity inside the matrix gaining a whole new perspective on rocks from the outside in.

We’re bringing the rock saw to Fall Fest this weekend for live demonstrations. You’ll learn how slab cutting works, what different rocks look like inside, and how makers use slabs for jewelry, cabbing, and display pieces. Bring a rock you’re curious about and see what’s hiding beneath the surface.

Busy week in the DIYcave Jewelry Studio 🔥🔨✨

This week, students got hands-on with **Intro to Soldering: Stacker Rings** and **Intro to Metalsmithing**—turning raw metal into jewelry, one skill at a time.

We sawed.
We soldered. 🔥
We shaped.
We hammered + textured. 🔨
We polished.
We added patina.
And we made some seriously cool jewelry. ✨

From learning how to control a torch to getting that first clean solder seam—and watching a piece completely transform at the polishing wheel—there was a LOT happening at the bench this week.

New skills. New tools. Lots of creativity.
