a few years ago, i was finally diagnosed with an incurable genetic disease called #EhlersDanlosSyndrome - i don’t talk about this here much, but i want to raise awareness, & explain why i’ve been quieter than usual. 2024 was the year i felt brighter & more creative. these new press pics represent a new chapter musically, i also look myself again (for ages I literally didn’t even recognise myself in photos), so i feel ready to talk about it.

for years i was told it was in my head (even by doctors!), even when the use of my hands started to drastically impair, the NHS had no answer, but said i could never DJ or type again🤦 luckily, i can still do those things after two rounds of surgery.

i’ve had to take my healing into my own hands and fight to get answers and treatment my whole life. it took a while to accept that i have a disability, because i am (still) very driven & capable, plus extremely adamant i can & WILL do everything i want to lol. but i almost saw this as a challenge i had to overcome, believing i would ‘get better’ & only then would i talk about it. but healing is not linear! there were points (i call them flare-ups) that my quality of life was so poor that i was literally unable to walk or move from a supine position, unable to dress, or look after myself. sometimes i wasn’t even able to use my phone. the frustration was unbearable, i also got diagnosed with ADHD, so you can imagine my brain was going mad! being busy & engaging with music is such a huge part of my life / happiness; when i wasn’t able to do that, i suffered a big loss of identity. plus, when all treatment efforts failed, i became depressed. it was such a relief to get a diagnosis, but there isn’t a quick fix. EDS is a very complex and varied condition, & i also have a spicy 🌶️…. CONTINUED IN COMMENTS by @dj__mist

Get To Know: DJ Mist

Operating between the UK and Berlin, @dj__mist (fka Jessica) has built a wide-ranging career across DJing, curation, label work and long-running cultural projects. Whether behind the decks or working behind the scenes, their focus has always been on building spaces, platforms and connections within underground club culture.

With @lapse_records , Mist has developed a catalogue and platform rooted in the club, showcasing forward-thinking music from artists including Adam Curtain, Mariin, Len Lewis, Los Primos, DJ Gonzo, Sasha Zlykh and more. Beyond the label, Mist is co-founder and curator of Headroom Festival (@headroom.dance) - an intimate gathering set in the Welsh countryside that prioritises inclusivity, care and community, as well as previously developing their earlier female-led Rhythm Sister initiative, founded in 2016.

As a DJ, Mist has appeared at internationally respected festivals and events including Love International, Kala, India’s Magnetic Fields and Gottwood, while maintaining a strong connection to radio, most recently with ‘Bristol To Berlin’ on Noods Radio - a show exploring the musical, cultural and sociopolitical links between the two cities since relocating to Berlin five years ago.

For the upcoming Lapse x Public Affair party with Mor Elian, Jess goes B2B with PA founder Monika Taneska; the result of years of shared dancefloor experiences together. Come join us at @theloveinnbristol 23/01 by @dj__mist

ANNOUNCEMENT👋 my 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 ‘𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙡 𝙩𝙤 𝘽𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙞𝙣’, launches tonight on @noodsradio - 9pm GMT / 10pm CEST.

The show will be exploring the musical and cultural links between Bristol and Berlin from my own perspective, having made the move five years ago, and occasionally through a wider philosophical or sociopolitical lens. The ‘Bristol-Berlin’ connection has long been spoken about, and I’m looking forward to exploring it in radio format, from both a subjective and historical angle :)

Tonight’s first episode is a quick dive into 90s Dub Techno - a sound rooted in Berlin but hugely influential on Bristol’s dubstep, bass music, and wider electronic landscape.

In the next episode (TBA) I’ll be looking at the Philosophy of Dub Techno and how it reflects and responds to urban space - exploring the aesthetic, social and economic relationship between the sound and the cities, drawing from academic research and lived experience. Having nearly finished my Philosophy, Politics and Music degree I’m excited to add a little studious twist on these show concepts 🤓

The shows will be predominantly music-led, with further writings, reflections and tracklists shared after on my socials. I might even start a little blog if there’s interest…

Let me know if you’ll be locked in tonight 👇 taken in Berlin, Germany by @dj__mist
