‘The Pool (after DH)’
Acrylic on Plywood Board
400x400mm

I’ve been holding back this painting for a good while.
Heavily indebted to David Hockney, it seems the right time to reveal it as a heartfelt tribute to the man and his art. Today I see the diving board as David, overseeing the ripples…

As an aside, this is one of the few pieces where I have documented each stage of the creation of the work, as shown here.

‘Bob’
(My Own Version Of You)
Watercolour/Ink
420x297mm

Where to start with Mr Bob Dylan?

I was introduced to his music by the same family friend who introduced me to the music of Crosby Stills and Nash. I taped his ‘Bob Dylan at Budokan’ live LP and this was my way in. Released in 1979 (from the 1978 tour) I would have heard this in the late eighties but it is only listening to it now, after collecting earlier and later works right up to and including his latest LP – ‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’, and seeing him live in the 90s and 2000s that I can see it is a perfect snap shot of his working mind and methods of reinterpretation and renewal.

A singular voice, a living breathing cultural monolith carving out his own path, telling his story and our story, wrestling and creating with language, music and art. Always moving forward yet, at the same time, returning to and twisting the folk, country, jazz, gospel and blues which continue to inspire him. Relentlessly touring, playing with, reforming and stretching his own material to satisfy his need to never rest on the accolades that have been rightfully bestowed upon him.

I am lucky enough to see him live once again tonight in Manchester on his ‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’ tour.

This portrait is a tribute to his continued presence and importance in the world of the creative arts.

A true musical icon.

“Born in…

Having spotted it was both Bruce @springsteen and @markhamill ‘s birthdays over the weekend (23rd and 25th September respectively) I thought it might be a good time to share my homage to Springsteen and Star Wars, both important touchstones for me.

Featuring the iconic Star Wars character C-3PO recreating the iconic Born in the USA LP cover it would be remiss of me not to mention #georgelucas who imagined this wonderful space opera and @anthonydanielsofficial who played C-3PO in the films. Also a mention to @annieleibovitz who took the original photograph of Bruce Springsteen for the original 1984 album cover.

A fan of the original Star Wars trilogy from the age of nine, I was a bit late to arrive at my love of Bruce, it finally clicking into place with Live/1975-85 and Tunnel of Love albums. Since then I have soaked up his music backwards and forwards through his catalogue.

From the feedback I received from my David Crosby picture with many folk commenting on how it had a kind of stained glass look to it, I was keen to replicate that style with this picture. But, as I got into it, I couldn’t resist to try and capture the textures in Bruce’s jeans so the stained glass approach went out of the window.

Anyway, I’m pleased with how it turned out and hope you like it - though if you’re both a Springsteen and Star Trek fan, and not a Star Wars fan, apologies for any offence caused…

‘Croz’
(Paint You A Picture)
Watercolour/Ink
420x297mm

‘The canvas will dry
And the tears will too
Let me paint a picture
Paint a picture for you’
Words: Marc Cohn
Music: David Crosby
2016

Yesterday I posted some photos of sky trails and it got me thinking about David Crosby, who released an album called Sky Trails in 2017, the third of an incredible five albums he has released since 2014. I listened to the CD while driving my wife to work and decided to try doing a painting of this musical icon. His other recent albums provided a soundtrack to my afternoon of painting, including the lyrics above which popped up on the 2016 ‘Lighthouse’ album…. Some kind of sign?

I was first introduced to David Crosby’s music in the mid eighties when a close family friend introduced me to the music of Crosby, Stills and Nash. I will always be thankful for this and have absorbed and slowly collected Croz’s music over the years stretching back to his days as a founding member of The Byrds and forward to the autumnal creative burst of recent years.

I was lucky enough to see Crosby, Stills and Nash (just before they stopped talking) at the Albert Hall in 2013 with my father and the aforementioned family friend.

David Crosby’s body of work shows his wonderful way with melody and harmony, and is a truly a thing of beauty.

Thanks Croz!
