Friday 9th – Studio Listening Session (Gospel Meets Jazz)
Excited to roll out a 4 hour minimum set of Gospel Meets Jazz, from independent gospel artists exploring the rhythms to the Prestige label injecting a dose of the Baptist Beat. OG LP’s front and center…sit, listen, absorb, feel.

Gospel Soul Sunday….with a peak into the gospel influences that lay at the heart of these seminal recordings by Eugene McDaniels;

Outlaw
Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse

Released in 1970 and 1971 respectively, these back-to-back recordings don’t immediately identify as gospel, but a deeper dive reveals the spiritual influence that McDaniels drew upon to write two of the most important LPs arguably in the history of ‘modern music.’

Why are these albums not as revered as say Marvin’s “What’s Going On”? Despite being released on the major label Atlantic, both LPs have been embraced by collectors for some time, but not celebrated on a global scale.

McDaniels dubbed himself the Left Rev. McD and left no stone unturned with his shrewd lyrics and deft leftfield funk delivery.

His father was a Bishop and Eugene was singing at the church by the age of two, tutored by his mother.

Over the two sets, McDaniels enlisted some key players which included bassists Miroslav Vitous and Ron Carter, as well as drummer Alphonse Mouzon.

The subject matter varied from church experiences, heritage, the condition on a world wide scale, and a shrewd socio-commentary about his surroundings. The cover of “Outlaw”, with Eugene clutching a Holy Bible whilst standing next to a loaded machine gun. The quote “Under conditions of national emergency, like now, there are only two kinds of people…those who work for freedom and those who do not…the good guys vs. the bad guys.”

All identifiers that highlighted their presence to the government and specifically Spiro Agnew who set to work shutting them down, thus possibly providing the answer as to why these two pieces of perfect soul music rooted in gospel sensibilities, didn’t reach a mass market.

Check out the clips, and if you’re not familiar, then seek out the LPs for yourself…for added enlightenment, track down the book to gain some valuable insight.
