🎶 Super super grateful for an impromptu DJ set on the last night of Athens Music Week 🎧

@athens.music.week @goetheinstitut_athen

🎼 Also so grateful for the opportunity to work on the AMW Team for this year's conference! It has been an amazing experience and learning curve for me!

So apologies for being off radar the last month and a bit... I was working like a maniac, but it was totally worth it!

180 Speakers, 30 artists and 1000 attendees over the 4 day conference! Deffo a new CV highlight 🙌

Excited to see what's next 👀

Thanks to @katerinayannop for the video clip 📹

1. Protect Your Hearing: Tinnitus is real and permanent. Wear quality ear protection, especially at early gigs. For years I ignored this rule, even before I was a DJ. Now I respect my ears too much to not protect them.

2. Curate, Don't Hoard: A smaller library you know and love is better than thousands of songs you haven't listened to. Download stuff carefully with intention and listen to stuff before adding it to your USB...

3. Mix with Your Ears, Not Your Eyes: Stop staring at the waveforms and BPM readouts. Learn to beatmatch by ear, it builds a deeper understanding of the music and saves you when software fails. Trust yourself and remeber, practice makes perfect!

1. Less is more
When you start out you think you need to prove yourself by doing lots of cool mixing techniques and tricks. However, good DJs often do less, allowing tracks to breathe, rather than constantly using effects and over-mixing. The crowd wants to hear the songs and are not that bothered about your technique.

2. Master Phrasing
Understand that music is built in phrases (usually 4, 8, or 16 bars depending on the genre). Dropping a new track in at the wrong time sounds bad, no matter how well matched the beats are.

3. Song Selection is 98% of the Job
The best transitions in the world cannot save a boring song selection. Focus on finding great music rather than just fancy mixing techniques. You can do a bad mix but as long as the next song is a banger…the crowd will forget in no time.

So new DJs, make sure you focus on the track selection more than anything!

What advice would you give to new DJs? Let me know in the comments!

✨ Had a great time DJing Friday night

... for the Afro themed event by @athens_fun_connection at @aurarooftop_athens

We went on a musical journey from 70s Highlife and Afrobeat also hearing some Nigerian Afro Disco and Congolese Funk on the way ✨

I had some fun Amapiano and Afrohouse edits of R&B and Hip Hop and even some rock anthems..

and you know we had plenty of Asake, Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy 🫶🫶🫶

Looking forward to the next one!

📩 Email bookings@djkikid.com or DM for enquiries 📲

Taking bookings for #Athens and beyond 🇬🇷 January and February 💃
