In this riveting spy thriller, no one is safe. I tested more than 100 lenses across more than 20 lens sets before we shot Orion.

I needed to know what each lens did. Close focus, flare, softness, chromatic aberration, every bit of funk.

The film ended up on Tribe7 Blackwing7 T-Tuned primes, with the Lomo Square Front 2x anamorphics for the flashbacks and a 1961 Canon 50mm f/0.95, the Dream Lens, to isolate characters. The Mamiya 17mm fisheye had incredible flares and let us show the alien’s POV a little better. We also used the Laowa 12mm and the Laowa Pro2be probes.

The test grabs are from the Abel and Greenwood tests: the Mamiya 17mm, the @laowa.cine 12mm, the Dream Lens, a @7isatribe Blackwing7 21.7mm, and many more. Special thanks to @jordantparrott and @dqcamera for their help, faces and cheerful dispositions 🤣 IYKYK

If this alien communicates through electromagnetism, through forces we can’t see, then we need a way to render electromagnetism. Ferrofluid responds to magnetic fields in real time. It moves; it almost thinks. That’s what we needed.

After initial tabletop tests at home, I built out a small lab space next to the stage. It was a whole little mad scientist setup.

The probe shots are the Laowa 24mm T8 2X Macro Pro2be kit.

I love doing SFX work. It’s all the same instinct as cinematography. It’s about how the image lives in front of the lens.

At its FilmQuest world premiere the film picked up 11 nominations and won Best Actor for Drew Van Acker and Best Visual Effects.

Unreal is usually used for previs. On Orion, we took it through to finished shots that made it on screen.

The ship is a kitbashed model, textured in Blender, then animated and composited in Unreal. We shot the astronaut and comped him in. The HDR backdrop was built for the shot.

Unreal and 3D previs are part of how I prep. On Orion, the same tools carried all the way to finished shots.

Almost every fixture you see in the film is doing double duty as production design. The lighting and the architecture are inseparable.

The hexagon over the lab is Aputure Infinibars. Every door has an Aputure MC Pro in its lock, cued from red to green and back as the door opens and closes. It’s another way to show that the facility is being controlled remotely. Apollo is locked in, but the locks themselves are being switched from somewhere else.

In the flashbacks, Creamsource SpaceX units are in-frame practicals, paired with the Lomo Square Fronts for their horizontal flare. Those same units also live in the lab and Sonic Chamber.

In the Sonic Chamber, the single beam onto the plinth is a DeSisti Muses of Light Aurea, from the LED series DeSisti developed with Vittorio Storaro and Francesca Storaro. For the Sonic Chamber, we needed one source, one beam, one moment of revelation, and we needed it to live in frame as a production design element at the same time.

This reel is a look at the crane work on Orion.

The crane was the BuckShot, a mini manual technocrane built by Scotty Buckler. I’m on the boom and David Quateman is on the wheels.

There’s an alien being in the building with everybody, and at any moment it might be seeing through the walls. In several sequences the camera adopts its perspective, floating around the characters as they talk. I’d move the crane wherever felt right. DQ would frame on the wheels. We were improvising.

Every set in Orion was designed in Vectorworks by Mike Conte. Mike would send me the model and I’d put the lighting in, in Unreal Engine. We could literally scout the set before it existed; walk through it virtually, find camera positions, see what the practicals were doing.

Aaron Fuoco, my gaffer, had 3D renderings and full scans of the spaces before he ever stepped onto the floor. We originally wanted rounded corners in some of the spaces. Once we saw the geometry in Unreal, the brutalism just worked better.
