I’ve gone through a lot of home tours. There’s a moment in almost all of them where the person walks past a piece of art without a word. Not out of modesty, there’s genuinely nothing to say. It was chosen for the wall, the wall is doing fine, and that’s the whole story.

And then, in other homes, the person stops in front of one work and starts telling me about the artist, or a memory, or their initial interpretation of the piece.

That’s the difference between decorating with art and collecting it. Nothing to do with price, provenance, or whether the piece is an original. It’s whether the work has become an actor in your life.

Last week’s newsletter was about that shift...what produces it, and why I call every one of my clients a collector, whether they’d claim the word or not. by @dlartconsulting

I’m looking for three works for a private residence in the Black Hills.

Two large-scale stairwell works, ideally paintings, approximately 84” H × 50–70” W, and an installation for a 10’ H × 16’ W wall in an open room.

The clients lean toward traditional imagery, particularly landscapes, and warmer tones. The mountain setting can inform the work without being too literal. Abstract painting isn’t the right fit, nor is portraiture, but I’m open to other media and unusual installations. Across all three, I’m looking for work that feels considered and distinctive, with room for something unexpected.

Submission details below. Please share with artists whose work might be a fit! by @dlartconsulting

Independence is important to me. It’s one of the main reasons I don’t represent artists or carry inventory, and never plan to. by @dlartconsulting

We celebrated our anniversary this past weekend at Dear Emilia @dearemilia_denver which was divine. And I'd just like to say that having Jared by my side has allowed me to build and grow this business in the way I have, and I'm immensely grateful. Partnership for me has really been a catalyst that allows me to become who I want to be in the world, and I'm endlessly grateful for JB's support and belief in me, and in this business.
I feel endlessly grateful to this man for all of the love and steadiness and joy and brilliance he brings to my life. by @dlartconsulting

These clients were both such a pleasure to work with. I’m glad they named the discovery of their taste as well. I’ve said it before but it really does come down to the clients taste and response to the artwork to make that final selection. I can guide the vision and the strategy and present options that come from my curatorial eye, but at the end of the day the client is the one living with the artwork and their taste is important. Not every client has a sense of their taste to begin with, which is what I help guide them in discovering by @dlartconsulting

On taste! My job is not to push my own taste onto the client, it’s to guide their acquisitions and help present options that align with what the client, the design and the collections narrative are calling for by @dlartconsulting

Looking at art, I am interested in how quickly we look for an outside opinion to help us understand what we’re supposed to see.

We look for the wall text, the artist’s statement, the person standing next to us who seems to know more. We forget that our own response to a work is information too.

I’ve been thinking about what it actually means to interpret art, especially when the art is going to live in your home rather than hang on a museum wall. What do you notice before you know anything about the artist? Where does your eye go? What keeps pulling you back?

I wrote more about this in the latest Notes for a Bon Vivant, including why I think the second look is often more interesting than the first. by @dlartconsulting

Had the pleasure of teaching a few classes of interior design students about art in the design process last week. Afterward I kept thinking about the types of questions you have to ask in order to really get to what a clients wants in their art. Which takes experience and honing, but not art world expertise in the way it’s often thought about by @dlartconsulting

I think often about art having a function in a room, beyond simply looking beautiful in it. A work can change the pace of a space, asking you to pause, look longer, come into the present, or notice something you might have otherwise missed. by @dlartconsulting

I recently spent some time looking closely at The Listening Room by Chad Dorsey Design, @chadcalebdorsey and it stayed with me.

There’s something about a room like this that makes you want to slow down and consider what the art is actually doing. Not simply whether a piece looks good in the room, but how it changes the experience of being in it, what it asks you to notice, and what happens when you give a work a little more attention.

So I wrote about it in the latest issue of my newsletter. It’s a close reading of the art in The Listening Room, and a look at a few of the decisions that make the room work as well as it does.

Read it through the link in my bio. by @dlartconsulting
