Reflecting is not something I do enough of, though doing so now I look back on this night fondly at the @architectureanddesignaustralia 2024 Sustainability Awards.

Initially we were not going to enter until it was suggested we should. Looking at some of the other amazing products we didn't think we were in with a chance, others suggested that perhaps we were. Were we? Sitting at the table quite nervous as it led to our category of "best new Green Building Material/Product".

I think we started believing we were in with a chance at this point, then, wow we won! Awesome.
I don't think Geoff had a speech sorted and winged it, had a couple of drinks and got on with it the next day.

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been connecting still with more of the other winners which has been very positive. Made me think back to this night.

It was a big step in the right direction, towards one of my/our goals this year, to become more of a commodity rather than a novelty. Good memories.

Last call for the hi-vis carpet. 🦺

Seen this already? Here’s your friendly reminder. New to it? Perfect timing, because our factory tours are on THIS WEEK for @AdelaideDesignWeek.

For the first time, we’re opening the doors so you can see the only process of its kind in Australia up close. It’s a rare look at what goes on before our timber reaches a home or a building.

Whether you build, design, make or are just curious, you’re welcome.

Thursday 15 and Saturday 17 October
12pm-1.30pm
North Plympton, Adelaide

The tours are free, but the numbers are limited. Registration essential via link in bio.

Thanks to our friends @sustainablebuildersalliance for helping spread the word.

See you on the floor! 😉

“NEWNEW is a bold provocation for Australia’s interiors industry. Conceived by Cultivated + Nexus Designs, this immersive modular pavilion turns rescued iconic furniture, reclaimed timber and zero-waste materials (each with a pre- or post-life circular journey) into a striking domestic-scale interior, proving restoration is one of design’s most powerful environmental opportunities.”

Created by us when we were Nexus Designs collaborating with the driving force for change that is Josh Ellis and @cultivated_au NEWNEW is a Gold Winner at this year’s GOOD DESIGN AWARDS. We hope this recognition enables us to continuing sharing all the goodness this project uncovered. Link in bio ⬆

With continued thanks to partners, suppliers, friends and colleagues who all played a part in bringing this project to life: @cultivated_au @craftedhardwoodscom @mark_tuckey @wildheather_australia @artbankau @oslekcoatings @gerardmurtagh.architect and 📸 @timothykaye by @dm_craftedhw

Come meet the humans and robots behind our material.

This Adelaide Design Week, the factory doors are open to the public for the first time, so we’re rolling out the hi-vis carpet. 🦺😉

Come round on Thursday 15 or Saturday 17 October. Bring your questions, your curiosity and a closed-toe pair of shoes. We’ll sort the rest. (Oh! and bring someone that needs to see it too!)

We’re keeping groups small so everyone can hear, ask questions and see the material properly. Register early to save your spot.

Details:
15 and 17 Oct 2026
12pm-1.30pm
North Plympton, Adelaide

Free, but registration essential via link in bio.

See you on the floor!

Three years in. We didn’t think we’d be here yet, talking Green Star scores. But here we are. 🥳

The @gbcaus is pushing the industry toward materials that are transparent, lower-impact, and properly accounted for, and that’s exactly the territory we live in. So when Green Star Fitouts v1 started scoring products on how much responsibility sits behind them, we found out we were already there 😎

Chain of Custody + Declare Label + Product Carbon Footprint. It’s the kind of paperwork that takes years to build and we’re proud to have done the work!

Our timber lands well above best practice under GBCA’s Responsible Products Framework, and that’s not a number we’re going to keep quiet about. 😅

Full guidance on where we fit, credit by credit, is on the blog. Link in bio.

Building Better for the Future.

At BC Doors, we believe better products start with better materials.

That's why we've partnered with Crafted Hardwoods to integrate engineered hardwood technology across our range—including doors, cavity units, jambs and architectural door systems.

By transforming sustainably sourced, lower-value timber into high-performance engineered hardwood, we're creating products with greater strength, improved stability and lasting durability, while making better use of our natural resources.

Innovation that performs today and helps build a better tomorrow.

Our Darren is on a panel at @breathearchitecture this week as part of MDW, sharing the mic with Chris Gilbert from @sustainable_hardwoods and Derek Layfield from @durra_panel. 👊🏼

Build a Future brings together designers, specifiers, makers and researchers for two days of conversation on low-carbon, circular materiality: six panel discussions across Friday 22 and Saturday 23 May at their Alfred Street offices.

Darren’s on this Friday, looking at how materials that have been around forever keep finding new relevance in contemporary construction.

If you’re in Melbourne, come along. Ticket revenue goes to the Wurundjeri Land Council, and there’s a free materials library on Level 2 featuring our timber alongside some great company. 👍🏼

Link for tickets in @breathearchitecture’s bio.

Robot machining the @craftedhardwoodscom pedestal from start to finish. For scale the billet of timber we are machining this from is 0.5m square by 1m high.

Robot sanding, craftedhardwoods and UV cured hardwax oil finishes. All feels a bit futuristic.

This is a project we have been working on with @craftedhardwoodscom , a table pedestal with integrated wiring channels machined from a solid billet of their blackbutt material.

This Sunday, @gluxbuilders are opening the doors to one of their Passivhaus projects, in collaboration with @sustainablebuildersalliance. What a dream to be in the mix with teams like this. 🙌🏻

If you’re keen to experience how these homes actually feel, this is one not to miss.

And for the timber lovers, Darren will be there to chat through our material and how it’s been used here. He’ll have little Eva in tow too, so look for the dad on duty 😉

26 April 2026
Warrandyte, VIC

Get all the details and let the team know you’re coming via our friends at @sustainablebuildersalliance

Darren’s setting his alarm bright and early. And not just once, we’ve got a full run of Bowens stops coming up! (The @bowens_au crew always make it easy to show up early 😉)

Come say hey, grab a snag and see our material up close.

We’re starting this Friday 10 April at Bowens Warragul.
7am till 9am

Add it to the run ✏️

Working with some of our @craftedhardwoods limited stock over the next few weeks for a small deck rebuild at home.

We have approx. 5-6m3 of Jarrah left after deciding not to continue with it after the closure of WA native forestry.

Words can't express, it is very, very good. If you aren't one of the masses who don't rate the redder species it is certainly worth consideration.

It would be great for many applications. In this case I'm using it for subfloor material being a small deck, the 2.45m length is not an issue, the flexible sizes particularly for the bearer has been great (100x75). It is a pity that it will not be seen!

I don't know if I would pass a lie detector test when signing a modern slavery act document anymore though, my daughter Eva loves getting involved and is cheap labor.
