10th December 1992. Thomas Banyacya, a senior of the Hopi nation, comes to the podium at the UN General Assembly and sprinkles cornmeal on the floor beside it. A greeting. An offering. The very first thing he does in the Great House of Mica is to feed it. His people had described that house of glass generation upon generation before it was actually built. It was to be a place where the nations would come together to end war without weapons. He’d carried that message since 1948. When he finally spoke, the hall was virtually empty. He told the handful that remained that three worlds had already come to an end (by earthquake, by ice and by flood) and each time it was because of man’s greed and his failure to heed the land. He pointed to the floods and storms of that year and to the whales beaching themselves as the same message coming through again. Then he produced the petroglyph from Prophecy Rock in Arizona. Two paths. One is technology with no moral law at all, and it just breaks into jagged lines and stops. The other is the path that stays with the land and keeps on going. COP31 opens in Antalya in eight days’ time. 100,000 people. Full house this time. The same question I had from Banyacya, who left that cornmeal on the floor: are the people who have the knowledge in the room, or are they outside the fence? In Kenya, that knowledge is in the coral and lime walls of Lamu and in the red soil, which we read as data at DNA Lab. It wasn’t lost. The people who nobody ever invited to the podium held it. Before we design anything, we read the ground. Every site already has an argument running. The way water leaves it after rain. Which clay the old houses were built from, and why they are still standing. A place carries its own logic long before a brief arrives, and most of our work is listening long enough to hear it. That is what systemic design means at DNA Lab. Start from what is true about the soil and the hands that already know the material. Then trace how one decision moves through the whole: a wall choice becomes a quarry, a quarry becomes a trader, a trader becomes a household income or a scar on a hillside. For us, care is a technical term. It means every intervention leaves the system more able to hold itself than it was before. This region is not short of ideas. It lacks design that treats the land as the first author. by @dna_lab_cbo
🏔️ Many countries. One interconnected bioregion. Our group project, The Himalaya Bioregion, explores how shared rivers connect communities across borders and how water scarcity, tourism, waste, livelihoods and governance shape their collective future. An interactive journey into the connections between ecological health and human wellbeing. #Himalaya #Bioregionalism #SystemsThinking #RegenerativeDesign https://psharmz.github.io/bioregion-quest/#issues by @dna_lab_cbo
The Nile: A River of Life. 🌿 The Nile is more than a river. It is a living corridor of biodiversity, connecting wetlands, forests, floodplains, and communities across Africa. From papyrus marshes to fish, birds, and crocodiles, its waters sustain a rich web of life. Each species plays a role in maintaining the river’s ecological balance. To protect the Nile is to protect the relationships that make life possible. The river flows. The ecosystem remembers. 🌍 #RiverNile #Biodiversity #EcologiesOfRepair #RegenerativeThinking #AfricanEcologies NatureBasedSolutions by @dna_lab_cbo

In the semi-arid bush, silence is never silent. The trees whisper in dry leaves, thorn and twisted bark, speaking slowly to anyone willing to walk without hurry. They know how to survive without abundance. How to bend without surrender. How to wait for rain without forgetting it. Perhaps the land is not quiet at all. Perhaps we have simply forgotten how to listen. by @dna_lab_cbo
Climate action has a memory problem. We arrive with models, metrics and masterplans, convinced the future begins when we do. The soil knows better. Here in Machakos, a semi-arid landscape can look empty to the hurried eye. But land is an excellent accountant. It remembers every tree removed, every season of rain, every path water once took, every decision made upstream. And unlike us, it doesn’t lose the minutes from the last meeting. Perhaps climate action begins less with saving the planet and more with learning to read what the planet has already written. The Soil Remembers. A white paper on memory, land and why regeneration may require us to become better listeners before we become better builders. #TheSoilRemembers #ClimateAction #RegenerativeDesign #Machakos #EcologiesOfRepair by @dna_lab_cbo

The Slope Value Ledger asks a simple question: What if money could learn to read water? Across Kenya’s catchments, healthy slopes hold water, recharge aquifers, protect soils and sustain communities, yet much of this value remains invisible to financial systems. The Slope Value Ledger is a proposed tool for making that ecological value legible without reducing nature to a price tag. By combining community-grounded data, a simple Slope Health Score and partnerships with WRUAs, SACCOs, insurers and county programmes, the aim is to connect better stewardship with tangible opportunity. Water is not money - and that’s the point. The goal is to redesign finance so that it recognises what keeps landscapes and communities alive. Nepal’s glacial collapse (Aug 26) sent a 10m wall of water through Rasuwa. 160 dead, 900 missing. Infrastructure wiped out. This isn’t a distant disaster; it’s a real-time warning for Mauritius. Our team (Mauritius, India, Kenya, US, Canada) argues: institutional blindness to indigenous & traditional knowledge turns warnings into tragedies. Mauritius tracks urban water demand, yet overlooks smallholder farmers and fishing communities. We have the signs. Are we reading them? As COP31 looms, the real question: Will we keep filtering out the knowledge that could save us?
