PROTECTING LIVESTOCK, SUPPORTING FARMERS AND STRENGTHENING ANIMAL HEALTH.

Deputy Minister Nokuzola Capa engages with farmers in Ngcengane, Eastern Cape, during a sheep scab vaccination initiative in which 2,230 sheep are vaccinated to help protect them against this highly contagious skin disease.

Sheep scab is caused by parasitic mites that cause intense itching, skin irritation, wool loss and skin damage. If left untreated, the disease can compromise animal welfare, reduce farm productivity and threaten farmers’ livelihoods.

The initiative highlights the importance of preventive animal health measures and collaboration between farmers and veterinary officials. Regular flock monitoring, prompt reporting of suspected cases and adherence to professional veterinary guidance are essential to controlling sheep scab and limiting its spread.

The National Department of Agriculture continues to work alongside farming communities to protect livestock, strengthen agricultural productivity and support sustainable farming livelihoods.

Healthy animals. Stronger farmers. More resilient farming communities.
