A MOMENT OF RECOGNITION. A MISSION THAT CONTINUES. Last night, I had the honour of attending the 2026 South African Agricultural Awards as a nominee in the Bees and Pollinators Conservation category, representing Cinga Bee (Pty) Ltd. We didn't walk away with the award, but I walked away grateful for the journey, the recognition, and the opportunity to stand among individuals and organisations contributing to South Africa's agricultural future. Being nominated was an achievement in itself, It reminded me that the work we do protecting bees, solving human-bee conflicts, supporting pollination, and building opportunities through beekeeping — is worth pursuing. To the organisers, fellow nominees, supporters, and everyone who continues to believe in this journey, thank you so much. Ngiyabonga kakhulu. The award was one moment. The mission is much bigger. We keep learning, building, protecting our bees, and creating opportunities through apiculture. This journey is far from over. To our esteemed GULL graduates from the Bloemfontein Campus and the South Campus - today we honour you. The graduation was about more than certificates. As Prof Richard Teare reminds us - a graduation should make you feel special, that you have achieved something truly memorable. And you have! You chose a harder path. Not just theory, but action learning. Not just learning for yourself, but learning that transforms your community. From seven students in 2022 to forty-seven across our campuses this year, your growth tells the story of a movement - a movement built on the principle that, "Change starts with me, and then I share it with others." You have lived out the values of our university — impact, care, excellence, sustainability, accountability, and social justice. Bloem Campus, South Campus - you did not just complete a qualification. You became leaders. You became change agents. We are incredibly proud of you. Go forth and let your communities feel the difference of what you have learned. Congratulations! 🤍

Small-scale farmers, big impact! Eastern Cape rural farmers contributed 46.75% of South Africa’s non-commercial maize production in the 2024/25 season. This highlights the vital role smallholder farmers play in strengthening food security and rural livelihoods. Through SASSAM, we’re working towards supporting these farmers by connecting agricultural knowledge, climate intelligence and digital tools to enable smarter, more informed farming decisions and build long-term resilience. We are incredibly proud to have had Ashton Winery participate in the WIETA Fair and Safe Harvest 2026 campaign. For Ashton Winery, the campaign was rooted in training and supporting their seasonal workers throughout the harvest period, especially as rising temperatures in the Western Cape wine regions bring new challenges to our vineyards every year. This season was defined not just by the quality of grapes in the Langeberg Region, but by the commitment to the people who harvested them. Through heat-safety training, access to shade and water, and ongoing worker support, Ashton Winery is protecting the hands that feed our industry. A sincere thank you to the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and the South African Wine Industry Professional Body (SAWIPB) for their support and guidance. When we work together, we build a stronger, more ethical industry for everyone. But the work does not stop here. We are looking ahead to the 2027 harvest and inviting forward-thinking sponsors to join us. If you are interested in sponsoring the 2027 WIETA Fair and Safe Harvest campaign and aligning your brand with ethical excellence, please reach out. Contact us at info@wieta.org.za or visit our website at www.wieta.org.za to learn more about sponsorship opportunities. #AshtonWinery #WIETA #FairAndSafeHarvest #SeasonalWorkerSupport
