Why are we so comfortable giving dogs fake animals… but uncomfortable giving them the real thing? 🐺 Think about it. The furry toy. The squeak. The rabbit-shaped toy. They’re designed to tap into a dog’s natural prey drive, chase, grab, bite, shake. Yet when we give them something that actually comes from an animal, hairy rabbit ears, rabbit feet, cow ears, beef skin, suddenly people think it’s disgusting or extreme. Why? Dogs evolved from carnivorous ancestors. They have teeth, jaws and digestive systems adapted to eating animal-based foods. And natural chews can provide enrichment, chewing activity and an outlet for behaviours that are completely normal to dogs. Meanwhile, we’ve somehow reached a point where highly processed treats and brightly coloured supermarket snacks are considered completely normal. Maybe we’ve got “normal” backwards. This isn’t about saying every dog needs exactly the same diet. It’s about asking a simple question: Have we moved too far away from what a dog naturally is? We’ve got a surprise little guest in this video 👀 You’re feeding raw, but are you feeding raw meaty bones? One of the reasons I feed them to my own dogs is the chewing involved. Mince doesn’t give them much to work at. With raw meaty bones, they’re using their paws, pulling at the meat and changing the angle to work out how to eat it. And I just love watching them do that. You can see how involved they get. There’s plenty to offer: 🦴 An outlet for natural chewing and tearing behaviours. 🦴 Something to focus on and work at. 🦴 Different textures to explore. 🦴 Variety in cuts and proteins. 🦴 Chewing action that can help remove some surface plaque—although it doesn’t replace brushing or dental care. For me, how our dogs experience their food matters just as much as what goes into the bowl. Are you choosing your dog’s food because of what’s inside the bag or because of the name printed on the front? The front of the bag sells the food. The back of the bag tells you what you’re actually feeding. In this video, I compare Royal Canin, Hill’s Science Plan and Big Bully Pet Supplies by turning the bags around and reading the composition. The Royal Canin recipe lists dehydrated poultry protein but doesn’t tell you which poultry or what percentage is included. That’s followed by several separately listed cereal ingredients and other vaguely described animal ingredients. Science Plan is more transparent, declaring 17% total poultry, including 14% chicken, but wheat, maize and broken rice still feature prominently. Then we have Big Bully has clearly named meat, a clearly stated meat content and ingredients such as sweet potato and peas. You know what you’re buying and what you’re putting into your dog’s bowl. Are we biased? We’re not asking you to blindly take our word for it. Every point comes directly from the composition printed on these three bags. Read them, compare them and make your own decision. This is my honest opinion and for me, the difference is black and white. Your dog eats this food every single day. They deserve more than clever packaging and a famous name.
