Sam Altman came to Dogpatch as a guest of @ycombinator and their latest batch of entrepreneurs a few months back, packing into the atrium between my meeting room and office in the old Union Iron Works building for a conversation about where AI is really headed.

Sam (@sama), a former startup founder who once ran YC himself, is now the CEO of @openai, the company that put ChatGPT in everyone’s pocket and kicked off the current AI era.

What stood out was his view of OpenAI as “much more of a utility… building the world’s biggest, cheapest, best, smartest solar battery,” and his straight-faced call that AGI arrives before California high-speed rail, with anything happening on a computer transforming vastly faster than anything in the physical world.

Ashton Kutcher came to Dogpatch as a guest of @ycombinator and their latest batch of entrepreneurs, packing into the second floor at YC HQ for a conversation about AI, venture capital, and how he invests.

The former sitcom star turned one of tech’s sharpest early investors, is now the co-founder of @aplusk’s new fund Decimal Capital, with a track record that includes early bets on @airbnb, @uber, @spotify, and, more recently, @openai and Anthropic.

What stood out was his conviction that AGI is inevitable, and that seed investors who don’t underwrite that inevitability are getting it wrong. His view: “Anything intended to be built will get built,” so the real edge is backing what AGI won’t build. He also put a stake in the ground: by 2029, he expects agentic work to cost less than human labor across whole industries.

Demis Hassabis came to Dogpatch as a guest of @ycombinator and their latest batch of entrepreneurs back in April, packing into the atrium between my meeting room and office in the old Union Iron Works building for a conversation about where AI is really headed.

Demis, a former chess prodigy turned neuroscientist, is now the CEO of @googledeepmind, where his team’s work on protein folding was recognized with a Nobel Prize.

What stood out was his view that the real magic happens where deep tech intersects with fields like materials, medicine, and math, and his insistence on long‑term, cross‑disciplinary thinking as the way to unlock the next big breakthroughs.

We recently celebrated 12 years of @dogpatchwealth with a room full of people who made it possible. I feel immense gratitude for the trust, the community, and especially for family: @joannabgould, @ruthanngould, and our kiddos, who cheer me on in everything I do.

A special toast to my dad, who inspired this path and would have loved this moment.
