Dogs on Paper had a lot planned for fall — a new session offering, new products, fall minis, and renewed energy to welcome new and old clients back to the studio on September 1st.

But during our summer break, we realized a break was so very needed. We’ve been nonstop with this for over four years, trying to create something special — beautiful portraits of the dogs who mean everything to their people.

We’ve collaborated with local businesses, donated time and sessions to fundraisers and rescue orgs, and poured ourselves into this little studio in more ways than we can list.

And as a one-person studio with a pug as an assistant and occasional stand-in model (he prefers napping to working), and hence the “we” in Dogs on Paper — we are just tired. We’ve run out of steam, so to speak.

We don’t want to close our doors. But we can’t keep operating at the pace we were, and we can’t keep giving our time and services away the way we have been. Studio overhead is real, and we’d really like to keep those doors open. It’s a tiny space, as some of you know, but it’s a meaningful one — it’s let us create memories for so many people who love their dogs.

As we move into the months ahead, we’ll be accepting a small number of portrait sessions through the end of November, before we break again for the holidays.

We’re not going anywhere. We’re just doing this differently now — slower, smaller, and only in the ways that feel right, and sustainable. Thank you for understanding, and for loving your dogs enough to bring them here. 🖤 taken in Dogs on Paper by @dogsonpaperstudio

Something’s been brewing in our studio.

It started with a question we hear after almost every session: “How do we choose just one?”

Now you don’t have to.

Introducing Nine on Paper, our newest offering and signature piece, just in time for the season. Your nine favorite portraits, thoughtfully designed in our studio into one piece of fine art and finished in an oversized gallery mat. Ready to hang, and made to be treasured.

Shown here with Dagger’s Halloween session in dark wood. Also available in black, white and light wood.

Ask us about adding one to your session.

A piece of your heart, as art. 🖤

Who’s ready for cozy portrait season?

The Holiday Sessions are here, and we want to capture a little joy before the year winds down. This isn’t a mini — it’s a full 30-minute portrait session with your choice of 2 high-res images, perfect for this year’s holiday card, with or without festive accessories from our collection. Color or black and white, solo pup or with their favorite person (or two), it’s up to you. All for $125, and that includes access to our curated shop of prints, frames, albums and more.

This year we’re being more intentional. We’re taking fewer sessions, so spots are limited, and the studio will be closed in December so we can enjoy the holidays with our family too.

Two dates only: November 8 + November 15.

I’ve photographed Jenn and several of her dogs over the years, but last week was my first time meeting Choji. When Jenn booked him for a fall mini, I knew he was sick and wondered whether pumpkins and bat wings were the right fit for him. Jenn didn’t hesitate: he deserved all the fun, just like any other pup. She was right.

That afternoon he was sweet, a good sport about every prop (see my fall mini post about Choji), and full of kisses for his mom.

Just days later, Choji crossed the rainbow bridge in Jenn’s arms. He was not even a year old, and he was loved every day of his life.

Jenn sent me the most beautiful note. She wrote, “These photos are more than pictures—they’re pieces of my heart.” That’s why I’ve always loved being a photographer. I started out photographing dogs, spent years capturing weddings and families, and have come full circle back to dogs. Through all of it, I’ve learned that these are the moments that matter most.

Every session lets me look through the lens into a soul, whether it belongs to a person or a dog, and Choji’s was such a gentle one. Jenn, thank you for trusting me with your boy. My heart is with you.

Rest easy, sweet Choji-Bear. ♥️🌈
