🆘 CANELO is alerted for EUTHANASIA and DEADLINED for Sat, 8AM 10/3. He is available for adoption, foster or rescue and needs an approved exit plan by 5PM tomorrow 10/2‼️

Another South LA shelter dog sick with an upper respiratory infection and trapped in cage confinement, CANELO is set to die after a report on 9/24 that, while doing rounds, staff noted Canelo was lunging and biting at the kennel door - retreating into the cubby, then returning to lunge at the kennel door again. Sadly, this big beautiful boy has been in URI kennel isolation since 9/14 and, to add insult to injury, staff is using a note from one month ago to help justify the decision to euthanasia him. On 9/1, he had a personality conflict with another dog in playgroup. Canelo was hard to steer in that moment but did steer away with heavy pressure. After that one session, Canelo enjoyed three more playgroup outings before getting sick with URI. In one, he overcorrected a dog who tried mounting him but was steerable. In the next two outings, Canelo was back to his usual tolerant self with playgroup handlers noting that Canelo was “extremely tolerant” of being mounted during those sessions. In all his other playgroup notes (since June), Canelo has been consistently described as tolerant around the other dogs with a gentle dainty playstyle. His previous owner noted that Canelo needs discipline but also reported that he was good with other dogs, friendly with people including children, and is house broken.

What is happening at SLA is beyond heartbreaking. URI has become a death sentence and any momentary mis-step in playgroup is being used to define a dog and sentence him to death. We LOVE this sweet, loving, big boy. After more than 3 months at the shelter, he will die on Sat 10/3 unless adopted, fostered, or rescued by 5PM Fri 10/2.

🆘 REGGIE is alerted for euthanasia and deadlined for TOMORROW Friday, 8AM 10/2. He is “Rescue Only” and needs an approved rescue plan by end of the day TODAY or he can be put down first thing Friday morning.

Reggie has had a sad existence while at the shelter. He was left outside in June, infested with fleas and with a deep wound on his face and another wound on his head. We don’t know what happened to this lovable boy but his physical condition indicated that he didn’t have the best past life. Then, shortly into his stay at SLA, Reggie got sick and was trapped in kennel isolation for 2 solid months (unable to step outside for any enrichment, exercise, or even potty breaks). Yet despite this prolonged confinement, Reggie’s friendly, upbeat personality did not waiver. He was a gentleman in his kennel to both staff and volunteers, always greeting calmly with a wagging tail. He has also been sweet and loving when out with volunteers - affectionate, silly, and polite.

Reggie has participated in playgroup 17 times. He’s enjoyed some playful sessions but has required management as a selective, assertive participant. He can be pushy, argumentative and give over corrections, often less tolerant of males. Sadly, during his last playgroup outing, Reggie started a dog fight after being annoyed by a female dog who had been hall monitoring him (i.e. policing his behavior). Reggie was unresponsive to correction tools in that moment (uninterruptable drive) and had to be physically removed from the situation. Because of that incident, Reggie was immediately euth-listed and made RESCUE ONLY.

What Reggie needs is a responsible rescue placement in order to survive. If anyone has it in their heart to SAVE REGGIE, please contact South LA Shelter IMMEDIATELY! You can view more video of Reggie by clicking on his A number. 💔 He dies tomorrow, FRIDAY 10/2, anytime after 8AM unless saved!

Flerp Alert 😍 at the South LA shelter! Meet MR. STUMPY. This adorable short stack is ridiculously cute and just as sweet. He arrived as a stray dog last month and was understandably a little overwhelmed initially. Sadly he caught an upper respiratory infection early into his stay and spent just over 3 weeks in kennel isolation. ❤️‍🩹 During that time, MR. STUMPY remained well mannered in his kennel, greeted us quietly and sweetly with wagging tail, and patiently waited for his URI confinement to end. This week, MR. STUMPY was medically cleared from his URI and rejoined playgroup. ♥️ He has a gentle dainty play style, is tolerant of other dogs, mingles and is steerable in playgroup. He is often sexually motivated (wanting to mount) but is currently unaltered. He would be neutered as part of any placement. We would love to see this little shorty find a good home. You can meet MR. STUMPY at SLA.

Rescued 🎉♥️ Will update when details are available

🆘 She’s only a puppy but MISTY is set to die Friday morning. ALERTED for EUTHANASIA and DEADLINED for 8AM 10/2 due to FAS (jumping, constant barking, and spinning in her kennel).

This pretty petite Shepherd pup came to the South LA shelter two months ago, along with her brothers (Brock and Ash). All of them came down with an upper respiratory infection while at SLA and, last month, Brock landed on the euth list for FAS. (Ash is still at the shelter). Thankfully, Brock was rescued in time. Now his sister Misty is scheduled to die for similarly displaying FAS and having a hard time with shelter life. Misty has been in playgroup only 8 times due to her prior URI kennel confinement. She has been described as soft and tolerant of other dogs, usually just mingling or keeping to herself in the yard. Today, this sweetie engaged in some actual play. She also, at times, picked on soft dogs during the play session but was steerable. When dogs in another yard started a scuffle, Misty ran into a corner to hide. 💔 We took Misty out for some solo yard time afterwards. She was timid and worried but clearly trying to connect and longing to feel safe. What this young puppy needs is a supportive home environment with someone who can help her decompress and blossom. MISTY needs an approved exit plan (adoption, foster, or rescue) by end of day Thursday 10/1 or she can be put down as early as 8AM on Friday. Please help this sweet, scared pup live.

MISTY #A2286583
14 months old, 51 lbs, female
Misty has a hygroma under each of her front elbows (a fluid-filled swelling that formed under the skin often created by the body to protect the area from repeated pressure). She likely laid down on hard surfaces for most of her young life. 💔

ADOPTED 🎉♥️ 🆘 HELP WAFFLES! She is medically alerted for EUTHANASIA and DEADLINED for Thursday because she easily overheats at the shelter. She needs an adopter or rescue to save her before 4PM 10/1.

This very sweet and loving girl came to the South LA shelter in May. She was initially and understandably timid and overwhelmed in playgroup during her early days. But this good girl became a regular playgroup player, affiliative with people, steerable, and respectful of dogs who didn’t want to interact. At times, Waffles can be an energetic, pushy hall monitor but she switches into play mode with gentle, dainty players. Waffles was one of many dogs at SLA who caught an upper respiratory infection, consequently placed in kennel isolation. In fact, Waffles endured two separate prolonged periods of URI confinement while at SLA (in July and then in August). We were thrilled when she recovered and transferred to the West Valley Shelter as SLA struggled with overpopulation and containment of URI cases. Waffles quickly won over the hearts of volunteers at West Valley and her transfer was intended to improve her chances for adoption. Sadly, Waffles is now medically alerted for internal hyperthermia. She overheats easily and her condition is not sustainable in a shelter environment long-term. She continues to join playgroup (monitored to make sure she doesn’t over do it) and she still enjoys yard time with volunteers. Her medical and behavior notes can be provided.

We are heartbroken that, after surviving URI twice and enduring more than four months of shelter living, this lovable girl will die because she easily overheats in her outdoor shelter kennel. 💔 Please, if you can help our friend Waffles, go to the West Valley shelter and save her. You can view more video of Waffles by clicking on her A number.

Can you hear the sound of a life changing? ♥️ Check out TOMMY boy, loving life thanks to adoption. Formerly known as Olimpio from the South LA shelter, this handsome pupper had been one of many dogs stuck in kennel isolation (more than once) due to an upper respiratory infection. When a good person asked to foster him, so he could heal in a less stressful and more sanitary foster environment, she was denied because the shelter wouldn’t approve any URI dogs for foster care. We were heartbroken for our furry friend but this would-be-foster couldn’t stand the idea of leaving Olimpio sick and stuck in cage confinement. She adopted him! ♥️ Since leaving SLA nearly three weeks ago, Tommy regained his health and now enjoys multiple walks a day, playing with toys, and being a super happy and energetic furever pet. His dog mom Lyn reports that Tommy is the softest, sweetest, super goofball and he’s truly living his best life. ♥️ Thank you, Lyn, for being a life saver and Tommy’s hero.

If you too can help a dog in need, there are many dogs battling URI at South LA. We keep seeing the same soul-crushing patterns - dogs sick in prolonged cage confinement only to be alerted for euthanasia as the shelter struggles with overcrowding and stopping the spread of URI and other communicable conditions. 💔 Like Tommy, these dogs would have a much better chance of recovery outside of the shelter and with private vet care. We keep losing precious souls to the never-ending cycle of medical kennel confinement to euthanasia. 💔 Be a life changer by adopting a shelter dog in need.

Update: Sasha lives. ♥️ “Condition has improved. Responding to URI meds at this time, will cont on course of treatment and monitor. If condition changes could be placed back on end of day orange alert.”

🆘 SASHA is MEDICALLY ALERTED with a deadline TODAY of 4PM! 🆘 This sweet girl is still relatively new to the shelter (less than 3 weeks) and now she will die due to suspected pneumonia if not adopted or rescued ASAP. We have already lost several dogs due to suspected pneumonia without any medical alert or the opportunity for someone from the public to save them. Please, if you can save this sweet, young pup, contact shelter staff immediately.

In the short time Sasha has been at the South LA shelter, she joined playgroup 4 times. Initially, soft, timid and overwhelmed, this tender-hearted cutie showed significant improvement by her second session and had been enjoying bouts of play before becoming sick. She was moved inside earlier this week. She has a hacking cough with increased lung sounds and is suspected to have pneumonia. She needs medical care beyond what the shelter can provide and she needs out by 4PM TODAY!

Sasha was allowed a short time outside with volunteers yesterday. She was upbeat and happy, soaking up affection, snacking on treats, and playing a bit of fetch. (Click on her A number below to see more video). She also previously participated in Adventure Buddy Day. Sasha is a loving girl who needs a hero. She needs adoption or rescue by TODAY, SATURDAY 9/26 at 4PM. She’ll need to see a private vet for diagnostics and treatment. We know it’s not much time, but hoping someone is able to save this sweet girl! She’s waiting at South Los Angeles Shelter!

RESCUED 9/28 by @vip_rsq 🎉♥️ Please honor pledges.

🆘 NOVA is ALERTED for EUTHANASIA and needs adoption, foster or rescue before 8AM Mon 9/28 in order to live. The shelter is closed on Mondays so an approved exit plan must be in place by 5pm Sunday.

Another victim of the soul-crushing cycle of URI-kennel isolation deaths at South LA, Nova has been in URI cage confinement for nearly 2 weeks. Her last playgroup outing was on 9/14 and she’s now scheduled to die within days because she snarled, growled, bared teeth, nipped at cage door when shelter staff tried to administer booster shots on 9/15.

This gorgeous, chocolate colored, blue eyed girl came to SLA in mid-August and has come so far in the short time she has been at the shelter. In her initial playgroup assessment, she was slightly wary of handling with a gentle dainty playstyle but Nova quickly came out of her shell becoming a consistent social player and often engaging in high energy, push pull play. She also quickly became affectionate and engaging with her handlers. Sadly all of her enrichment activities came to a sudden halt when Nova contracted an upper respiratory infection and poor Nova doesn’t understand why she’s been trapped in her shelter cage. If you can help our friend by adopting, fostering, or rescuing her, please contact shelter staff as soon as possible to secure an approved exit plan by end of day Sunday. Nova is deadlined for 8AM Mon 9/28.

Take a new look at SANDY! ♥️ This pretty, petite, brown Boxer mix is back from foster care and ready to find her own happy home. Thanks to a longterm foster, Sandy had been saved from euthanasia at the South LA shelter and, during nearly six weeks in foster care, Sandy proved to be a friendly, playful, and house broken pet. Her foster left GREAT notes about Sandy (friendly with strangers, good with children and other dogs). An active and energetic pupper, Sandy was not the ideal match for the foster’s older Boxer mix but the foster had wonderful things to say about our petite friend. Originally an owner surrender in May, Sandy’s previous family also left similar notes stating that Sandy was a friendly girl who loved to play and did well with strangers and other dogs.

At the shelter, Sandy has been an eager, high energy, playgroup player, She can be pushy and assertive but steerable and playful. She’s engaging, friendly and affectionate with handlers and was very well-mannered & social during a doggy day out in public. We would love to see this good girl find her furever home. You can meet Sandy at the South LA shelter. She’s in kennel 164.

🚨URGENT LISTED at South LA‼️Adopt, foster or rescue to help VINNY.

He’s an instant mood booster with his tippy tappy toes and wins hands down for the most adorable kennel presence. Meet VINNY at the South LA Shelter. This super sweet, compact cutie pie came to the shelter as a stray dog in July. Vinny is a true people pleaser, having charmed volunteers and even the shelter groomer. ♥️

When Vinny arrived at SLA, he came with a similar looking female dog named Winnie #A2285659 who tragically caught an upper respiratory infection and, subsequently, lost her life for displaying negative in-kennel behavior as a result of prolonged URI kennel isolation.💔 Vinny has been in playgroup while at the shelter but has preferred the company of people over the other dogs. He’s been steerable with occasional bouts of play but has also given over-reactive corrections in playgroup, tipping into arguments or scuffles. For that, this darling boy is now marked URGENT at SLA. 💔 What Vinny most enjoys is yard time with handlers where he can readily receive belly rubs and be all about the cuddles. So if you’re looking for a happy, affectionate wigglebutt to be a loving and loyal home companion, stop by the South LA shelter and meet Vinny.

CRUMBCAKE is finally free from URI kennel isolation after 41 days in cage confinement! Now let’s help our lovable Rottie friend get out of the shelter.

This big beautiful boy came to the South LA shelter as a stray dog in July. He only had a handful of playgroup sessions before coming down with an upper respiratory infection in August. He was finally & recently cleared from URI on 9/21 and rejoined playgroup. In playgroup, Crumbcake is considered tolerant of other dogs with a gentle, dainty playstyle. He has been a low energy mingler who gives appropriate greetings. Known as a “handler shadow,” Crumbcake often follows the playgroup team members around, preferring the company of people over dogs. ♥️ He is sweet and loving with volunteers and has been calm and well mannered meeting new people - leaning in for pets and taking treats gently. Even the shelter groomer gave Crumbcake good marks for being well behaved for a bath. We can’t believe this good boy has been at SLA for two months already. He deserves a good home. You can meet Crumbcake at the South LA shelter.
