🚨 Meet SCOOBY an incredibly sweet and loving 8-year-old and one of more than 200 dogs at the South LA shelter. SCOOBY came to SLA on 7/22 making him one of the longer term residents at SLA and causing him to be URGENT LISTED. He is in danger of landing on the EUTH LIST soon due to his length of stay. 💔

This big boy with a big heart is a happy, friendly guy who already knows basic commands like sit, down, stay, and paw. He’s a love with his handlers and very eager to please. Scooby has joined playgroup many times, initially stiff, selective, and grumbly for space. But, these days he’s considered tolerant and playful with social dogs. He can be less tolerant of males, specifically unaltered male dogs. Scooby is a good boy looking for a good home and you can meet him at South LA.

🚨 This good boy is SPRITE and, sadly, he’s on the URGENT LIST at South LA shelter as one of the longer term shelter dogs there. 💔 Sprite arrived as a stray dog on 7/20 and he actually received a positive staff report on his first day for being relaxed and walking well on leash. Sprite is an all-around nice guy - always friendly with volunteers and even the shelter groomer. He’s a regular playgroup player, usually tolerant of other dogs with a gentle dainty playstyle. At times, he can be selective and less tolerant of some male dogs but has been playful with social dogs.

In early September, Sprite caught an upper respiratory infection resulting in 3 long weeks of kennel isolation. During that entire time, Sprite remained well mannered in cage confinement and never received a negavtive staff note. We hate that this good boy is now in danger as an urgent listed dog at South LA. If you can help our friend, please meet him at South LA.

🆘 This pretty Shepherd puppy is CHARLY and she’s been alerted for euthanasia at the South LA shelter, deadlined for Thursday, 8AM 10/29‼️

Charly came to the shelter last month as a scared stray pup. She’s barely been at the shelter for a month and already scheduled to die for showing fear behavior toward staff while in her kennel (barking, growling, retreating to her kennel). The girl is actually incredibly sweet and loving. In fact, all her handling notes reflect a pup seeking comfort and safety. She was soft, anxious and wary of handling during her first playgroup outing with the playgroup team noting that Charly “appreciates a slow approach, can be WOH but wants ppl to protect [her].” During that session, Charly preferred the company of dogs over people. But by her second playgroup outing, this good girl preferred the company of playgroup handlers and, by her third outing, she began displaying a gentle dainty playstyle with other dogs. Her continued progress is documented and, in fact, during her most recent playgroup outing, Charly elevated her status to “social” with other dogs.

This is a young puppy who deserves a wonderful life, not death in a crowded LA shelter. Charly needs adoption, foster or rescue before Thursday, 8AM 10/29 in order to survive.

🚨 This adorable, playful, loving Shepsky is REX and he is scheduled to die Thursday. He is alerted for euthanasia and deadlined for 8AM 10/29‼️💔

What is most upsetting is that while the South LA shelter struggles with population control and alerts dogs for space, the shelter is too conveniently relying on dated behavior — not current behavior — to justify putting down dogs. Notably, this is a way to keep down the numbers of when the shelter euthanizes “for space.” Rex is just the lastest victim of this horrible pattern in South LA. He is a sweet, young, one-year-old puppy who arrived at the shelter with two siblings (Reya and Dino).

Rex is a fun, social, energetic boy who had been in kennel isolation for an upper respiratory infection from 9/25 until 10/18. As anyone can imagine, such prolonged cage confinement is tough on any active, young dog who doesn’t understand why, suddenly, he is not allowed to step outside of his concrete cage even for potty breaks. It was during this isolation period, specifically on 10/11, when staff reported that Rex was jumping in his cage, climbing the front, and spinning. That same day staff also reported that Rex had been repeatedly chewing a plastic floatation part of his water bowl (typical and understandable behavior from a puppy trapped in a cage with too much idle time and zero enrichment). Rex’s URI confinement finally ended on 10/18 and his notes since then have been positive, namely he’s consistently social and playful with other dogs in playgroup and sweet & engaging with volunteers and his playgroup handlers. This boy should not be facing death at the shelter but, sadly, he is EUTH LISTED for the staff reports on 10/11. He needs an adopter, foster or rescue to save him from South LA and his exit plan needs to be in place before 10/29. Help our young friend, please. Rex is at SLA waiting for you.

🚨This sweet girl is NINA and one of too many dogs at the South LA shelter. She is alerted for euthanasia and deadlined for 8AM THURS 10/29 because the shelter wants to free up her kennel space. 💔 She came to the shelter in July as an owner surrender due to landlord reasons. She will now lose her life due to no fault of her own unless someone adopts, fosters or rescues her before 10/29.

Nina is a friendly, sweet, and affectionate dog. She’s affiliative with her handlers, earned a positive report from the shelter groomer, and was exceptionally well-mannered on a public outing from the shelter today. Nina is one of many dogs who caught an upper respiratory infection while at the shelter. As a result, she was in kennel isolation for six long weeks! Notably, this good girl never received a negative staff report during that prolonged period of cage confinement. ♥️ Nina is a playgroup player - initially described as selective during her first week of playgroup - but subsequently described as either social or tolerant of other dogs. She has a gentle dainty playstyle with bouts of play and is often low energy. We are heartbroken that Nina is now EUTH LISTED for space and we really hope someone will step up for this darling before Thursday 10/29 to save her life.

🚨 CRUMBCAKE just landed on the EUTH LIST and must be adopted, fostered or rescued before SUN, 8AM 10/25‼️ He’s another sweet dog suffering kennel stress due to prolonged cage confinement.

This big beautiful boy originally came to the South LA shelter as a skinny stray in July. He had only a handful of playgroup sessions before coming down with an upper respiratory infection. He spent 41 days in URI isolation and was understandably stressed and frustrated by the inability to leave his kennel even for potty breaks. He began receiving negative in-kennel reports that he barked, growled and lunged toward staff from inside his kennel during cleaning time. Crumbcake was cleared of URI in late September but, sadly, only enjoyed a few days before returning to kennel isolation due to diarrhea. That second isolation period lasted more than 2 weeks. 💔 We were so happy to see Crumbcake finally released from medical cage confinement on Oct 11th but, just 10 days later, he was alerted for euthanasia due to in-kennel behavior towards staff during cleaning & feeding times (barking, growling, baring teeth, lunging). Crumbcake does NOT display such behavior with his handlers. He’s been sweet and friendly. In fact, playgroup handlers noted that Crumbcake “wants to be near handler/people so much that he is often in the way and underfoot.” Even the shelter groomer gave him good marks for being well behaved for a bath.

In playgroup, Crumbcake is tolerant of other dogs with a gentle, dainty playstyle. He’s been a low energy mingler who gives appropriate greetings and often follows the playgroup team members around (preferring the company of people over dogs). This lovable boy needs an exit plan by 5pm Sat or he can be put down as early as 8AM Sun.

🆘 This sweet 3 yr old boy doesn’t have much time left. He’s ALERTED purely for space and has found himself on this dreaded list simply because he’s waited longer than others for someone to choose him. His name is HAPPY and he arrived at the shelter as a stray in July. Since then, he’s been a regular participant in playgroup (described as selective with other pups and sexually motivated). He’s also wooed volunteers with his upbeat, sweet, joyful personality and has done well being bathed by the groomer! He’s a vibrant, playful, fun pup who truly deserves a happily ever after. Sadly, Happy is now scheduled to lose his life TOMORROW, FRIDAY 10/23 anytime after 8AM, so the shelter can create kennel space. He is available for foster, adoption, or rescue. Please help us get this resilient good boy to safety before it’s too late. He’s waiting at South Los Angeles Shelter.

ADOPTED 10/22/26 🎉♥️
Meet ARROW ❤️ This pretty Malinois was surrendered to the South LA shelter one month ago due to a move. She finds shelter life overwhelming and scary. She is simply too soft for the noise and chaos of a shelter environment.

Arrow was very anxious and confused when she first arrived but is an incredibly loving and affectionate dog. Her previous owner left good notes reporting that Arrow was friendly around strangers, gentle with children, good with other dogs, and respectful around cats. In shelter playgroup, Arrow is generally tolerant of other dogs, gives timid greetings, gives appropriate corrections, has a gentle dainty playstyle, and stays close to playgroup handlers. She’s a good girl who deserves a great life. You can meet her at the South LA Shelter.

🚨GORDO is deadlined for euthanasia on SUN, 8AM 10/25. Adoption, foster or rescue can save him‼️

This handsome hunk was a volunteer favorite at the West LA shelter and, subsequently, became a fan favorite among South LA volunteers. He’s been incredibly sweet & loving with all his handlers at the shelter. In playgroup, he’s also been affiliative with people and good with dogs. Gordo even attended a public pack walk with other dogs and their owners, courtesy of Los Angeles Responsible Pit Bull Owners (LARPBO). Gordo was a friendly, well mannered participant, even going to a coffee shop afterwards where he readily let strangers approach him.

Gordo came to South LA in June and, after a month of shelter living, began receiving negative reports for in-kennel behavior towards staff (barking, growling, charging the kennel door). In August, a good person took Gordo into foster care where Gordo stayed for two months. Gordo returned to the shelter last week because he was displaying “stranger danger” in the foster home. In September, Gordon bit a “stranger” in the home when that person leaned over to pet him. The bite broke skin but did not require medical attention. The foster continued to foster Gordo hoping to work through this behavior but it proved too much for the foster to manage. Today, Gordo landed on the euthanasia list with a EUTH DATE of 10/25. Gordo needs adoption, foster or rescue before 8AM SUN.

We are so saddened for our good friend. While we were surprised to learn of his behavior in the foster home, such territorial behavior should not be taken lightly. Gordo needs a responsible person committed to training as counter-conditioning this behavior will likely require significant time and effort. Notably, the foster reported that the “stranger danger” problem only occurred inside the home. Gordo was otherwise described as friendly, playful, affectionate, shy, and mellow. The foster said Gordo was low energy, calm, quiet and obedient. He was well behaved when left alone and did well crated during the day. If you can help, Gordo is at SLA.

ONE DAY LEFT TO SAVE WOLF! 🆘 ALERTED FOR EUTHANASIA, he is DEADLINED FOR THURS 8AM 10/22 due to fear anxiety and stress in the kennel environment!🚨 Adoption, foster or rescue can save this good boy‼️

You may have seen several posts about this magnificent boy because all his volunteer handlers are completely smitten with him. A big beautiful young dog, Wolf arrived as a stray over three months ago. He is a total love, very affectionate and affiliative with people. He’s been tolerant of other dogs in playgroup, displaying a gentle dainty play style. (He doesn’t like to be mounted by other dogs and can be less tolerant of selective male dogs). Like many SLA dogs, Wolf caught an upper respiratory infection while at the shelter and his URI confinement lasted for almost a full month. Wolf was even orange alerted and we worried he would land on the medical euthanasia list but, thankfully, he recovered. As anyone can imagine, that kind of prolonged URI cage isolation was very hard on him. He wasn’t allowed to come out of his cage for any enrichment time, not even for potty breaks. It was after that period of URI isolation when staff began noting negative in-kennel behavior (barking, growling, showing teeth, and running into his cubby when staff approached his kennel). Notably, Wolf does NOT behave that way with any of his handlers. To the contrary, he’s friendly, happy, and eager to interact. This wonderful and resilient pupper survived URI and more than 3 months of shelter living. He’s ready to leave his shelter days behind and he deserves to live. Who can help our young friend? Wolf needs an adoption, foster or rescue plan by end of day today, Wed 10/21, or he can be put down as early as 8AM Thur 10/22.

Imagine losing your home and family without ever knowing why. 💔 This pretty red Husky is LUNA and she came to the South LA shelter last month as an owner surrender because her family was moving out of the country and not taking her with them. She arrived with an open sore on her face (owner noted it was an infection and couldn’t remember the last time Luna had seen a vet). According to her previous owner, Luna is well mannered, friendly with people, gentle with children, good with dogs (lived with a Jack Russell) but doesn’t get along with cats.

At the shelter, she’s been doing well in playgroup with other dogs and is extremely affiliative with people. She is a sweet, friendly girl who doesn’t understand nor like shelter life. She often takes her food and tosses it around her kennel, even lying down on top of the mess of kibble. Can someone help this girl?
