Dr. Taylor Leigh Smallwood, DVM

The last four years have been some of the toughest, yet most rewarding years of my life. So much growth, so many highs and lows, and countless lessons along the way — but I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world.

This degree represents so much more than treating animals of all species. It represents compassion, empathy, resilience, healing, and a lifelong commitment to caring for others.

I am beyond grateful to have completed this journey alongside my WesternU family. Becoming a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is an accomplishment I will carry with pride forever. Little Tay is screaming on the inside!😭

Cheers to the Class of 2026 — we did it! 🩺🐾 Congratulations, dogtors!

I came into this retreat nervous. 80+ healthcare professionals, most of whom I had never met, and a whole lot of uncertainty about what the next three days would hold.

Or at least, that’s what I thought. 🤍

From the moment I checked in, everything seemed to fall into place. I first met an ICU nurse (s/o @shelby_denae ) who I connected with in a way I never expected, started mingling with strangers who quickly felt like friends, and realized maybe I didn’t have to walk into this next chapter alone.

The next three days were a little bit of everything: I served hair 💁🏼‍♀️🤭, cried (A LOT😅😂), laughed until my cheeks hurt, focused on God, learned how to breathe through the hard moments, and was reminded that taking care of others starts with learning how to take care of ourselves first.

As I get ready to start my career as a veterinarian VERY soon, I’ve been wrestling with excitement, fear, uncertainty, and a healthy dose of imposter syndrome. Getting to slow down at the beautiful Ojai Valley Inn and pour back into myself was something I didn’t realize how badly I needed.

I got the chance to meet veterinarians I’ve looked up to since the very beginning of my vet school era, along with nurses, physicians, surgeons, dentists, PAs, pharmacists, and so many other healthcare professionals who reminded me how powerful it is to have people in your corner who understand the weight of what we do on the daily.

I came in with very little confidence in myself as a healthcare professional. But I’m leaving with a fuller heart, a bigger community, and a much stronger reminder of my why.

To my FIGS family: thank you for the vulnerability, wisdom, laughter, tears, and community.

And to the FIGS team that made this all possible: thank you for giving us something healthcare professionals so rarely get to do - permission to slow down, grieve, breathe, rest, and look inward.

Three days, countless memories, and relationships I’ll carry far beyond this retreat.

Here’s to the next chapter—and remembering to breathe through it. 🤍➕
