Before and after training: Severe Leash Reactivity

My protocol for private lessons with dogs who have leash reactivity is to focus on 2 commands: Heel and Place.

A lot of the time, reactivity is a symptom of a lack of boundaries and structure in a dog’s daily life. Implementing a strict Heel command along with a Place command can make a huge difference in their overall behavior.

This dog in particular is a bit neurotic, and his owners recently told me that he has become a much calmer dog in his day-to-day life overall and, as you can see, a lot less reactive.

I’ll also add that this dog’s reactivity stems from fear, believe it or not, and a lack of confidence. So while the goal is obviously to address the reactivity, we also have to work on building the dog’s confidence and giving him structure so he knows how to handle situations that previously overwhelmed him.

The difference speaks for itself. #dogtraining #leashtraining by @dogtrainertaylor

Oakley is doing amazing with his off leash heel!

Oakley’s owners started out in our Basic Obedience Group Class, and he completed about five classes before coming to us for a 2 week Board and Train.

His owner only asked me to focus on two things: a heel and an off leash recall. She wasn’t asking for an off leash heel, just a nice loose leash walk. But Oakley is a smart guy, so we were able to go above and beyond what she asked for.

I’m really proud of how far he’s come! #dogtraining #offleash taken in New Braunfels, Texas by @dogtrainertaylor

I haven’t been super active on here lately but I had to come on to post this pretty girl. This is Amelia and she is on her 4th week of our unique board and train program where she gets to go home on the weekends! Amelia is working on overall obedience and confidence building. She’s a super sweet girl but is very unsure of herself in new environments and around new people/dogs. She’s already come a long way but her owner will have to keep up the work with the foundation I have set for Amelia to have the most success! #dogtraining taken in New Braunfels, Texas by @dogtrainertaylor

Marcy just completed her 2 week board and train where we worked on all the obedience. She is exceptionally smart and was further ahead than most dogs at the 2 week mark. She has some leash reactivity that I worked on as well and she made a lot of progress with specifically not lunging after vehicles anymore but she still struggles with her reactivity towards other dogs. I’m confident that her reactivity can get under control if her owners keep up with her training! by @dogtrainertaylor

The bestest boy in the whole world, Jethro, finished his 3 week board and train program today 🥲 He did so good and his owners are super happy with how much progressed he has made. He’s legit one of the best dogs I have ever had the pleasure of training. I miss him already 🥹 by @dogtrainertaylor
