India’s most powerful social network existed long before Mark Zuckerberg started adding friends. They called her Aunty.

Somewhere between family albums and Instagram comments, “Aunty” caught a PR crisis. The title that once came with house keys, hot rotis and harder truths slowly picked up side quests as shorthand for ageing, interfering and losing the plot. Funny how the same woman trusted with your childhood somehow became the internet’s favourite punchline.

@norblacknorwhite saw the word catching strays and did what Vivienne Westwood once did with “Destroy.” Put it on a chest, change the conversation.

Turns out the strongest institutions rarely come with office hours. Aunties have been running our unofficial ministries for decades.

Minister of Feeding. Secretary of “Beta call me when you reach.” Department of Matchmaking, Moral Policing and Medical Second Opinions. Before Yelp came the aunty who knew the dentist. Before Reddit there was the aunty who’d “heard something” about the neighbours. Before LinkedIn introductions there was “I know someone.” Public service running on private funding.

Then NBNW found the perfect headline writer. @thezeenataman has spent half a century carrying the country’s definition of glamour, now she’s carrying “AUNTY” across her chest. Call it semantic alchemy. The woman generations grew up calling timeless just volunteered for a title everyone else had been running from.

The distance from Satyam Shivam Sundaram to Instagram ends with six letters across her chest. The word finally found its leading lady.

Then they took it a step further. Most brands ask you to post the fit, NBNW asked you to post the woman. @ohauntyji feels less like a moodboard and more like India’s family album finally getting museum lighting. Astrophysicists with spice racks full of Bengali masalas. Aunties serving archival fits before Pinterest learnt what an archive was.

The final flex never even touched the graphic. Proceeds from the AUNTY tee support @shakti.shalini and their work with survivors of gender and sexual violence.

People often ask me why I’m so passionate about building community.

The answer is simple: intentional networking changed my life.

When I graduated the RCA, I applied for over 200 jobs. Rejection after rejection. It was exhausting, and honestly, I started questioning whether I’d ever get my foot in the door.

The job I eventually got wasn’t because I had the perfect CV.

It was because someone knew of me.

Not even knew me well. They had simply seen my work, seen me showing up, and remembered my name when an opportunity came along.

That moment completely changed how I think about networking.

Networking isn’t about collecting business cards or awkwardly pitching yourself to strangers. It’s about consistently putting yourself out there, sharing what you care about, showing up to events, supporting others, and letting people know what you do.

You never know who’s watching quietly, who might recommend you in a room you’re not in, or who will think of you months, or even years later.

Every opportunity I’ve had since then has come through people. Through conversations. Through community.

So if you’ve been debating whether to attend that event, introduce yourself to someone, or share your work online, this is your sign.

The worst that happens is someone doesn’t remember you.

The best? It changes your life.

Keep showing up. People are paying attention, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

This South Asian Heritage Month, discover the sisters behind Malligai Films, Samantha & Sabrina. (@samantha.amali.joseph @_sabrinema @malligaifilms @erasuredancefilm)

We talk to them about their new short film ‘Erasure’, a movement piece fusing contemporary dance with South Indian Kuthu to explore erasure, trauma and resistance without a single word of dialogue. Fully self funded, the film launches its crowdfunding campaign on 11th July, and we’re here for it.

This South Asian Heritage Month, discover Vikalp Durga Mishra ( @vikalpdurgamishra )

Where birds land where forests used to be and wide eyed figures draw you into his world. With a practice that started with watercolour studies of stems and leaves in Kanpur long before it became a career, Mishra’s paintings observe rather than perform. Design school in Mumbai from 2017 sharpened how he presents the work, but never changed what it’s actually about: love, empathy, and the quiet cost of a world we keep shrinking.
