1) The hatred of queer people and queer culture is not an inherent part of South Asian heritage. It is in fact, the opposite. It is a learned behaviour influenced by other cultures who centre fear, shame and ego. 2) South Asian culture is rich and diverse and there are many open minded and open hearted people within the nearly 2billion population. Though a minority, those people are the ones that share our culture and values. It takes strength to be open minded and lead with love and understanding. Saying that, in a modern capitalist world, its dangerous to be strong so one by one people take on the culture of the masses because they want to be accepted and fit in. I guess Im very privileged to have this view. The fact that my immediate family and large parts of my extended family have never ever been Homophobic or Transphobic, including my grand parents and other elders has always been really interesting to me being someone who was born and raised in London. Since being a young child and visiting Pakistan often in the summer holidays, I have more memories of seeing people who are trans and living openly as themselves in Pakistan than I have ever experienced here in the UK. Recalling memories from when I was about 6 year old, I was intrigued when I first started seeing trans people in Pakistan but it just wasn’t a thing out there, and that was nearly 30 years ago. My mother taught me about the Hijra community and how important they were in society - in orphaning young female babies that had been abandoned at their doorsteps or left for dead by their parents. My mum always said they did gods work and no act in this world is greater or holier than making sacrifices to raise another persons child who had been abandoned.
