vhs stills from my father’s home movies circa ‘95 when we first came to NYC from Ukraine, in honor of father’s day tmrw

og was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2024 and is still here with us today. still undergoing chemotherapy, still working his 9-5, still taking photos and videos to this day. about a year ago, he handed this relic of a camera down to me, and i’ve integrated it into my workflow with the hope of creating a dialogue between the man who took me away from Ukraine as a child, and me (now older than he was then) returning back to the place he left behind.

most of the videos focus on my mother and me, but also his small inner circle while trying to find home in a foreign land. and, of course, vestiges of the Soviet Union, and it’s specter hanging over everything. one example, the Lenin statue with the broken clock (slide 9) is still in LES today, but moved to a different rooftop. i went and filmed it on the same camera, 30 years later, with a completely different context. in the process of unveiling that work, so letting his vision stand on its own today.

one of the most generous people i know and without whom i probably would have never picked up a camera. salut by @dommarker
