An archaeological dig in Weston, Missouri hopes to find remnants of slavery in one of the last remaining structures from that time period. The feelings that ran thru me as I entered this cellar will remain with me forever. It’s confirmed there were once shackles attached to the walls of this cellar that once sat below a pro-slavery tavern. Now, the dig hopes to uncover more of the history of this place. Thanks @mdwstar_motherofmen for bringing me on this story for @thekansascitystar.

Today marks two years I’ve been with the Star. As far as I know thru my research, I’m one of a handful of full-time Black photographers the Star has ever had. I’m living a dream my ancestors never imagined and stories like this are a reminder. I don’t take it lightly or for granted. @afaseleccion got the win versus Lawrence’s favorite team @lesverts.faf 3-0, on a historic night for Kansas City, the first time the city has hosted a World Cup match.

The atmosphere was absolutely electric and like nothing I’ve ever experienced. Still in shock a bit.

@turnstileluvconnection and friends turned up in LFK for the return of Day on the Hill at @universityofkansas. It’s been over a decade since the hill beneath the Campanile hosted a concert and this one didn’t disappoint. May have banged my head once or twice while taking these.

It’s important to celebrate the wins. When I was making this work, I was not making it for accolades or awards but when I completed it, I felt it was worthy of some recognition. When it didn’t come right away, I was slightly bummed, I can’t front. So, when I got word this project won first place from the Missouri Press Association (@missouripress), the validation felt real and right on time. Eternally grateful to the guys @kc_copperboyz and to everybody that showed love for this project.

Had a feeling it would be a special night. There was just something in the air. Monday Night Football. The return of Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs debut of Kenneth Walker III. A lot of plays came my way. In this season, my third covering the Chiefs, my goal is to have a growth mindset. To appreciate every moment. And to have as much fun as possible. Last time Missouri came to play Kansas in Lawrence, I was a freshman at KU. I was at the game and thru my now old, then drunken haze, I think we fans rushed the field and tore down the goalposts, which was a much more common occurrence back then. This is largely where I learned about the Border War.

College sports doesn’t have very many hatred based rivalries anymore but this one counts as such. F-bombs and chippy play throughout, indicative of a Civil War era rivalry. This game hasn’t been played in 20 years and I think maybe it’s ok to wait another 20.

My colleague @jm_the.writer and I won a @nabj Salute to Excellence Award for the second consecutive year, for our story on the Black rodeo coming to town for the first time in decades, published in @thekansascitystar back in 2025. The Kansas Jayhawks beat Long Island University 51-6 on an absolutely sweltering night in Lawrence, Kansas. A tune-up game before next Friday’s Border War vs. Missouri. Glad football season is back.

Got the opportunity to photograph @wutangclan at @mortonamphitheater last night. As a true hip-hop head this show was definitely on my bucket list. Arguably one of the best groups of all-time and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, everybody in the group can still hang, performing classic verses with ease. I wrote on my experience photographing them and a bit of my journey to this moment at the link in the bio.
