SRI LANKA HAS MORE THAN ONE STORY TO TELL ABOUT BARS
Today, Smoke & Bitters has been recognised again on the World’s 50 Best Bars 51–100 list, for the third time.

We are proud to be the only Sri Lankan bar on this year’s list.
But for us, the more exciting story is what is happening within and beyond our own four walls.

When we opened Smoke & Bitters six years ago, there wasn’t much of a global conversation about Sri Lankan bars. Today, Sri Lankan bartenders and bars are increasingly being recognised on international stages, and we’re proud to have played a small part in helping that happen.

Through Sunset Shifts and Voyagers series we’ve welcomed some of the world’s leading bars to Hiriketiya and taken our own bartenders and chefs around the world. We’ve shared knowledge, created collaborations, hosted masterclasses and helped connect our local bar community with the wider international scene.

For us, that’s the real story.
Not one bar competing for a place on a list, but a Sri Lankan hospitality community becoming increasingly visible to the world.
We’re incredibly proud of our team, our village and everyone who has helped us get here.
And we’re even more excited about what Sri Lankan hospitality can do next.

As we come into another season of Loves Local, we want everyone to just what it stands for and how it brings more of the community together. And this year we have changed things up to turn it into a 5 day residency for the bartenders, so that they are able to immerse themselves fully in learning.

“The Coconut Tree” is a rare, 8-minute short film, with dedication to the single resource that dictates our whole world.

For everything we do at Raa, revolves around the Coconut Tree.

We wanted to create an honest, unfiltered look into the beautiful, manual reality of traditional Sri Lankan toddy tapping - an ancestral craft that keeps our village community moving, and feeds everything we pour at Raa.

For us, sustainability isn’t a convenient label; it’s just a daily, practical relationship with the trees and the elements around us. This film is a slow, rhythmic tribute to that circular ecosystem.

To be ranked #71 on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars @50bestbars extended list for our second year running is something we accept with huge gratitude, deep humility, and a clear sense of purpose.

When we built Raa on the sand in Hiriketiya, 🌴 we set out to prove that an uncompromised, world-class bar experience could be built around a single native life force: the coconut palm. But what makes this recognition truly special isn’t just the liquid in the glass - it’s the ecosystem and people behind it.

This win belongs entirely to our merry band of village bartenders, chefs, and team who bring this space to life every day. It belongs to our local tapper scaling the trees, the fishermen landing their daily catch on our shore, and the home gardeners whose produce shapes our kitchen.

Operating a completely outdoor space means our circular system isn’t just a talking point - it’s a daily, practical reality. Every decision we make is rooted in keeping the value within our village, protecting our coastal environment, and proving that when local craft is elevated on a global stage, our entire community wins together.

To our guests, our neighbours, and the global hospitality community who continue to pull up a seat under our palms: thank you for believing in our island’s story. We are honoured to help bring Sri Lanka to the world. 🙏🏽🪁
