Donald Ryan Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of early works by Irving Petlin (1934โ€“2018), bringing together a group of charcoal drawings and paintings made during the 1950s and 1960s.

The exhibition traces a formative period in Petlinโ€™s practice, from his years in Chicago and at Yale to his arrival in Paris in 1959. The works reveal moments of freedom and experimentation as Petlin developed a deeply personal figurative language shaped by memory, mythology, and the psychological and social dimensions of human experience.

Opening October 28 at Donald Ryan Gallery.

Noah Jemisonโ€™s โ€œBlack Valhallaโ€, 1976, installed in โ€œJust Above Midtown: Changing Spacesโ€ at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2022โ€“23.

Jemison was among the earliest artists to exhibit at Just Above Midtown (JAM), the groundbreaking gallery founded by Linda Goode Bryant in 1974. Black Valhalla was first exhibited at JAM in Jemisonโ€™s 1976-77 solo exhibition. The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired the painting from the gallery shortly after it was shown.

Taking its title from Valhalla, the great hall in Norse mythology where slain warriors were received, the painting brings together silhouetted figures and fluid fields of color through Jemisonโ€™s distinctive use of encaustic.

In her 1976 review of Noah Jemisinโ€™s exhibition at Just Above Midtown, Lowery Stokes Sims describes the fluid relationship between abstraction and figuration that remain central to his work. She describes how Jemisinโ€™s lines transform โ€œbiomorphic color forms into more specific figural identities,โ€ while moving โ€œin, out, through them, around and about itself.โ€

Nearly fifty years later, this tension between abstraction and figuration remains at the heart of the works in

Jemisinโ€™s paintings reconsider the ways history is embedded in landscape and place. His landscapes are shaped not only by geography, but by the lives, memories, and spiritual legacies of those who have inhabited them. In 1993 Lucy R. Lippard described Jemisinโ€™s paintings as the reunion of "the spirits of place, material, and history." She explains that Jemisinโ€™s objects possess the power to call "any audience into a more intimate relationship with their own material memories." Place, for Jemisin, is both a record of lived experience and a means of negotiating and understanding of oneโ€™s own position in the world. taken in New York, New York by @donald_ryan_gallery
