Upper East Side Gallery Night walkthrough pt. 2—full of surprises spanning from post-war to contemporary masters, with glimpses of surrealism, minimalism, and expressionism. Here are a few standout pieces currently on view:

It was a pleasure to learn about the color field painting of Alejandro Corujeira. The luminous expanse of these paintings' surfaces unfold in counless ways with the viewer's shift in distance and focus, investigating perception at the borders of visual experiences and thresholds.

I was reminded of Brice Marden's minimal surfaces here. It is very timely that Gagosian is currently showing Marden's work at their 21st St gallery.

Another highlight was discovering Cosette Zeno at Richard Saltoun. A pioneering surrealist whose career spans across decades and centuries, Zeno (born in 1930) holds a direct historical line to the first generation of surrealists in Paris. Both the artist did her work are living links to mid-century avant-garde movements.

Rounding out the tour, it was a wonderful surprise at Kraushaar Galleries to walk in and see a historic self-portrait by Elmer Bischoff hanging next to a brilliant Alex Katz portrait, all part of a curated mix of exceptional modern and contemporary works

Join us tomorrow, Thursday, September 24th, for Upper East Side Gallery Night, celebrating the opening of New York’s fall art week.

Twenty-one Upper East Side galleries will participate in a day and evening of exhibitions and conversation across the neighborhood.

Galleries will keep normal hours and extend them until 9pm. Independent 20th Century opens the same morning at the Breuer Building, and The Armory Show opens at the Javits Center. With Independent closing at 7pm, the night gives collectors, curators and visitors in town for the fairs a reason to stay uptown into the evening.

The night brings together long-established and newer spaces whose programs range across modern, post-war and contemporary art. It is intended to introduce wider audiences to the density and variety of the Upper East Side gallery district, and to open the neighborhood up for an evening built around exhibitions rather than appointments.

IRVING PETLI N
1934 - 2018

In loving memory of Irving Petlin, whose art looked “beneath surfaces, beyond appearances” and searched, in the words of poet Michael Palmer, “for a language of the unsayable.”

Pictured outside his Chilmark studio on Martha’s Vineyard, where for more than 40 summers he created some of his most important later pastels, including works from the Periodic Table series inspired by Primo Levi.
