I am delighted to have two of my small Tondo pieces included in the exhibition ‘We Are Our Memory’ organised by @contemporary_kent_artists @thehorsebridge in Whitstable. The title of the show is a quote from the last lines of the poem ‘Cambridge’ by Jorge Luis Borges: “We are our memory, we are that chimerical museum of shifting shapes, that pile of broken mirrors”. The oscillating coloured fragments of paint and linen in my work, along with the implied perpetual motion of the circular format, hopefully resonate with the curators’ chosen theme. The show runs until Sunday 18th October, I will be in the gallery on the morning of Saturday 17th and I have been invited to talk at 11am so please come to see the show and say hello. by @donaldsmithstudio

‘Colour//Space’ 2017-26. Oil on linen, 80cm x 100cm. I have started to revisit a series of paintings from 2017, recalibrating the colour composition and creating a division halfway along the longest side. The intention is to reconsider these paintings in relation to my current thinking and to create a series to accompany a painting from 2018 entitled ‘Colour//Space (Delhi)’ (image 4). The first recalibrated painting is shown in image 5 and in a previous post from July. by @donaldsmithstudio

Notes on a summer Part 3: Went to the ever wonderful St Paul de Vence up in the hills behind Nice; stayed at the tranquil @etoiledesaintpaul Memorable breakfasts with kumquat jam made with fruit from the garden; the bar at the Le Colombe D’Or is one of our favourite places and I had extra wish fulfilment when we were sat between the Picasso and Leger paintings for dinner; went to a fabulous party hosted by dear friends up in Vence; took the local bus to Cagnes Sur Mer to visit the Renoir House museum. It was wonderful to walk through his house and gardens and sense things that he saw and painted, I hadn’t expected to be so breathtakingly moved when we walked into a room where his chair and easel were set up. Sadly some of the paintings we saw in situ were stolen a couple of weeks later; went back to another favourite place, @fondationmaeght . The permanent collections and superb building and sculpture gardens by Josep Lluis Sert are always inspiring, enjoyed the Ellsworth Kelly show plus some knockout fashion designs by Andre Courreges; visited @fondation_cab down the hill from the Maeght. The Nassos Daphnis and Rita McBride exhibition, the design collections and the sculpture gardens (which include a work by our late dear friend Peter Downsbrough) are great and it is actually possible to rent and stay at the dismountable house conceived by iconic designer Jean Prouve. An enjoyable and thought-provoking few days. by @donaldsmithstudio
