NEW ART CENTRE I IAN STEPHENSON I PLANES of HEAVEN I spent a delightful day last Saturday at the Private View for an exhibition of painting by Ian Stephenson at the gallery of Roche Court Sculpture Park near Salisbury. Founded by Madeleine Bessborough in 1958 in Sloane Street, London, moving to Wiltshire in 1994, it hosts rotating sculptures, set in this idyllic landscape, by distinguished artists and interior exhibition spaces. This ‘ground breaking’ exhibition, opened by Dr. Chris Stephens, Director of the Holburne Gallery in Bath, concentrates of Stepheson’s large works from the 1960’s and early 70’s. Stephenson has built these paintings from countless tiny droplets or specks of paint layered over one another. From a distance the dots merge into luminous veils of colour; close up, each mark becomes an individual event. They evoke vast skies, galaxies or cosmic space. Rather than using colour to describe objects, Stephenson used it to create mood, vibration, and movement. Blues, greens, reds, and yellows overlap in transparent layers, producing a glowing, almost musical harmony. Stephenson even wrote ‘any orientation’ on the back some of his works for hanging instructions so as to be interpreted freely by the viewer. What mattered was the experience not the subject matter. These paintings reward slow looking. From across the room they appear as floating fields of colour; as you move closer they dissolve into thousands of separate marks, creating a constantly changing visual experience. It was wonderful to see so many of the Chelsea Arts Club members, including Steve Stephenson, son of Ian, who brought Kate, his mother, Ian’s widow to the exhibition. All were filled with admiration for this visionary abstract artist. Photos: 1. Sitting in the sublime landscape 2.-3. Exhibition space 4. Guests 5. Dr. Chris Stephens opening remarks 6. Allen Jones sculpture 7. From the Design House gallery 8. Nao Matsunaga 9. Sheila Girling 10. WHY ART MATTERS IN YOUR HOME OFFICE Surrounding yourself with art in your home office is more than just decoration—it can transform the way you think, feel, and work. A carefully chosen artwork can inspire creativity, encourage fresh ideas, and provide a visual escape during busy days. Whether it’s a vibrant abstract painting, a calming landscape, or a thought-provoking contemporary piece, art helps create an environment that reflects your personality and aspirations. I find in my office at home that engaging with art I love can reduce my stress, improve my focus, and boost my overall wellbeing. In a home office, where motivation and productivity are key, the right artwork can set the tone for a positive and inspiring workspace. Art also reminds us to pause, reflect, and see things from different perspectives—qualities that are invaluable in both professional and personal life. Create a workspace that inspires you every day. Invest in art that speaks to you and let your surroundings fuel your imagination, productivity, and success. (Photo of my collection) DM me for advice on creating your personal gallery at home: sandra@sandrahiggins.com #artadvisory #HomeOffice #ArtInTheWorkspace #ContemporaryArt #InteriorInspiration #CreativeLiving #WorkFromHome #ArtCollectors #SandraHigginsArt #InspiringSpaces #ArtForInteriors #CreativityAtWork #ArtMakesADifference

We are delighted to announce that DONALD SMITH has joined Sandra Higgins Art in our online ART STOP shop. Working on finely woven linen, Smith builds his Tondo paintings from small fragments of vibrant colour in oil. The warp and weft of the material become part of the work itself, creating what he describes as “oscillating fields of energy” Geometric and hypnotic, each piece draws the eye into a dynamic matrix of colour and light. Donald Smith brings an exceptional depth of experience to his practice. Director of Exhibitions at Chelsea College of Art for three decades, he is also respected internationally as a curator, collaborating with major cultural figures across art, design and popular culture. He has spoken at Tate Britain, the Serpentine, the Royal College of Art and the Sorbonne. Featured here are several of Smith’s Tondo paintings: 1. Tondo No. 4 2026 Oil on Linen 30cm diameter £300 (£340 in unglazed frame) 2. Tondo No. 6 2026 Oil on Linen 30cm diameter £300 (£340 in unglazed frame) 3. Tondo No. 1 2026 Oil on Linen 30cm diameter £300 (£340 in unglazed frame) Other Tondo works are available now via sandrahiggins.art online ART STOP shop. For further information about viewing and to enquire about purchasing DM sandra@sandrahiggins.com #artadvisory #boldstatementpieces #artforpublicspaces #artforinteriorspaces #artforliving #affordableart #buyart #originalart #interiordesign #donaldsmithstudio
