The Information Front Vol. 3 is now available worldwide, go to @theinformationfront for links! 🇺🇦
For this one we took it up a few notches and produced a beautiful photobook!

UK: @villagebooks.co
EU / World: @schilt_publishing

The Information Front Volume 3 looks at a decade of war waged in Ukraine, since Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea to its present full scale invasion. The book
visualizes the years 2013 to 2023 primarily through the visions of young people born in the late 1980s and in an independent Ukraine through their involvement in the
sociopolitical transformations in the country, their experiences, fears, and everyday lives. The recent past marks a period of uncertainty, with local and global challenges. However, it was also a time of vibrant activity and emergence of civil society in Ukraine, with the flourishing of rave culture and creative industries. The history of Ukraine is the history of the struggle for the future, which continues from generation to generation. In this struggle, photography and art emerge as crucial tools for documenting and archiving change, as well as a symbol and instrument of resistance against war and colonial politics.

Our team of @theinformationfront @radchenko_ua @christophernunn_ and myself continue the initiative to promote Ukrainian culture and history through photography and provide support for authors. In collaboration with @odesaphotodays

Volume 3 is supported by @hangar.photoartcenter and the Department of Art and Media at @aaltoarts Aalto University.

Design always by the incomparable @syb_photo_books and lithography by Sebastiaan Hanekroot from @colourandbooks
Printing by @wilco_artbooks
Text and Editing: @valeria_rubia + Valeriia Nasedkina
Translation: Hanna Leliv, Oleksandra Kalach

Volume 2 of The Information Front is now out! This volume takes a different format and approach, looking at how photography has helped shaped Ukrainian identity and it’s path to freedom. Featuring four sections, we go back fifty years with photographers such as Boris Mikhailov, Viktor Kochetov and others from the Kharkiv School of photography and then into the collapse of the USSR and into the 90s with Alexander Chekmenev and Valeriy Miliserdov. Next, we look at the Maidan Revolution of Dignity and it’s representation. Chapter 3 is the younger generation of photographers and their break with tradition, emphasizing the body such as work by Elena Subach, Luu is da Bukreyeva, Mila Teashaieva and many more. Lastly, we look at the Russian war since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 up to today, from photojournalism to more artistic approaches. In all, an amazing survey of the richness and power of Ukrainian photography over history and it’s very important role. While it’s often been argued that photography is a colonial weapon, in this case photography reveals and foments change, emancipation, identity and freedom.

All profits from the sales of The Information Front go to the Ukrainian organization Depth of the Arts Fund, which supports Ukrainian culture, including
photographers in a partnership with @odesaphotodays. Volume 2 was supported by @noorderlichtphotography. It’s designed by @syb_photo_books and colour by @colourandbooks. Purchase your copies via @schilt_publishing.

Together with @radchenko_ua, @christophernunn_ and myself, we have created a newspaper @theinformationfront featuring photography by Ukrainian photographers witnessing the first months of the war in Ukraine. All profit from the sales of The Information Front will go to the Ukrainian charity The Depths of Art, which supports Ukrainian culture, including photographers in a partnership with Odesa Photo Days @odesaphotodays.

The Information Front believes that photography, especially photojournalism, plays a crucial role in learning about the violence inflicted and acts as a counter-measure to false truths and propaganda spreading.

Featuring a text by Ukrainian poet, author, and political activist @serhiy_zhadan.

The essence of a newspaper is that it wants to circulate and be exchanged. Become a “distributor from below” and order bulk copies of 10, 25, 50 and 100+ for a reduced price to ensure the circulation of photography. Buy your copy from @villagebooks.co or go our website, www.the information front.com

The Information Front is designed by @syb_photo_books and lithography by @colourandbooks.
The Information Front was made possible with the support of @freepressunltd through its “Media Lifeline Ukraine” and “Reporters Respond” initiatives, @pictoright and printed with support from @newspaperclub.

In the Journal, a conversation between @steve.bisson and @donaldweber explores the field of photography, the role of education, and Weber’s experience with *The Bureau of Operational Landscapes*

Founded in 2024, *The Bureau of Operational Landscapes* is a non-disciplinary initiative that explores overlooked industrial and infrastructural spaces through photography, guided tours, and site-based encounters, inviting participants to read the land beyond its official narratives.  Before turning to photography, Donald Weber trained as an architect and worked with Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Much of Weber’s work seeks to make visible the technological, spatial, legal, and political systems that shape our contemporary condition—the infrastructures of power.

Donald Weber is an Associate Professor of Contemporary Photography and Head of the MA Photography programme at Aalto University.

Okruhový dom armády teraz uvidíte aj z oranžovej vyhliadkovej platformy. 🧡

Suddenly life becomes something you never thought it’d become. August 20 was that day when my stepdad, Mark, was in the hospital after a serious car accident. He died the next day, at 5:35pm.

They say divorce is sh*t for kids, and it usually is; you never know who your parent’s new spouse might be. But my sister and I won the lottery with Mark, he embraced us fully as if we were his. We got ourselves a second dad.

To me, Mark was a model. He was a passionate wooden boater, restorer, historian. He did a few years as an insurance salesman after he got out of the Army (he served in Korea during Vietnam; he’d joke he was Radar from MASH but what he really loved to tell you is that he taught the French ambassador how to waterski) but insurance, he said, was boring as hell. So instead, he began the career doing what he loved most, finding old wooden boats and fixing them up and finding new ones.

Mark is the James Nachtwey of wooden boats. Mention his name, everyone knows. I always thought: if Mark can make a living doing what he loves, then why can’t I? I, too, would make a terrible insurance salesman.

He was a character, always ready with a story, a joke, an anecdote, usually exaggerated but in those exaggerations were where his love of people and camaraderie shone. He also had impeccable taste; the home my mom and he lived in is right out of some fantasy of wood and antiques and all kinds of strange ephemera from the pre-war era. He’d have made a great interior designer! Partly because he loved history and everything from that era, as long it was mechanical, the greasier the better, he’d have it. But partly because he just wanted to surround himself with things he loved. That included us. He’d have my nephew Clayton right there beside him “at the shop,” digging around the soggy bottoms and oil-stained engines.

It’s been a hell of a few days and will be more. But I’m sitting here, in his spot on the couch and just thinking about the privilege he gave us — the privilege of being a part of his universe, one full of love and passion and never forgetting: find what you love and seize every fibre of it, cause you never know when it’s gone. 🚤 taken in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire by @donaldweber

Gerald’s favourite bridge. We should all have favourite bridges. What’s yours? I’m partial to a few but since we’re in Toronto, there’s the Cherry Street Bridge which has huge concrete blocks high up in the air, acting as a counterweight to pivot the iron structure up 90 degrees, letting passing ships through. It’s a marvel.

p.s. Gerald also loves Helsinki’s new Krunuuvuori Bridge (probably butchered the spelling, anteeksi!). He’s got excellent taste in bridges. taken in Toronto, Ontario by @donaldweber
